    Some midweek games:

Wellington College 15-16 St Pat’s Silverstream

This game was played in heavy rain with a field that reminded me of 1970s and 1980s rugby in the wet. A very good DG to win it in those conditions.

    Southland BHS 43-12 Otago BHS

Palmerston North BHS 38-20 New Plymouth BHS

Interestingly the winger who scored three tries for SBHS is in the Warriors system.

@Steven-Harris Yeah, you see him actually take a step back to use firmer ground. The commentators said he is only a Y11. If the WC 1st 5 hadn't hit the post with the easy conversion the result could have been different.

Yeah the kid is a real prospect, was in the NZ u15s for basketball last year and looks to be concentrating on rugby now. Don't want to put too much pressure on the lad but he's big, skillful, kicks off both feet in general play well and as the droppie showed he has a decent temperament, certainly a player to keep an eye on.

The No. 8 for Silvesrtream is also on the Warriors books, he played well in this match.

@Boourns I was impressed with their no.7 and co-captain Elijah Solomona. He seems to be another with Warriors links.

    Super 8
Hamilton BHS 28-34 Rotorua BHS - Rotorua now has the Moascar Cup
    Hastings BHS 50-12 Gisborne BHS
    Tauranga BC 31-24 Napier BHS

Hamilton BHS did not play very well. Too many mistakes, and they have been missing their captain due to injury in recent games. A big loss.

    More controversy.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360720750/eligibility-row-erupts-over-five-year-14s-controversial-marlborough-boys-college-first-xv

If you can't graduate secondary school in 5 years, you shouldn't be playing rugby or any sport.

I know that we had a bit of it back in the day, but it's been institutionalised now and used by fuckwits like this guy in Ta$man to get ahead.

No. It's like the Ranfurly Shield, only for home games.

    New Cup Holder
    13. When there is a change in holder during the season, the new holder must within one week, provide the Moascar Cup Coordinator with:
(i)their schedule of remaining ‘home’ games (as defined in Rule 8ii) which all then become mandatory challenges.
(ii)a nominated ‘out of Provincial Union’ game (as defined in Rule 8i)
(iii)If the cup is won after the end of Term 2, then the out of Provincial Union game requirement will be waived for that year, but all home matches (as in Rule 8ii) become mandatory challenges.

EDIT: Worth looking over the following, but I'd suspect Rotorua will have to put it up for challenge against Hastings, as they're unlikely to have the required number of home games. However, it doesn't really say that new cup holders must adhere to the seven games system, so it's hard to say?

Hastings Boys High’ vs. Rotorua Boys’ High 33-34
Fun game to watch. A great contest between two pretty evenly matched teams, each with their own point of difference.

Te Ariki Rogers is some player at this level. I’ll be honest, watching some First XV games this year, you worry about the ability of the schools to produce players who excel in the basics of forward play. More than once did the kerfuffle between NZR and the schools about the NZ U18s cross my mind, thinking NZR had a point to worry about the schools’ development abilities, especially for the forwards. But then you see a guy like Rogers smash into everything and it restores your faith in the system. Proper old school Kiwi forward.

The position of number 8 looks to be a real position of strength this year. Rogers (Rotorua), Rupeni Raviyawa (FAHS), Sione Telefoni (CBHS), Alex Palazzo (PNBHS), Cruiz Simpson (Sacred Heart), Z’kdeus Schwalger (Wellington), Travis Findlay (Westlake), and I’m sure there are a few more that I’m forgetting right now. That is a lot of quality.

I see that there was a dodgy hand in the scrum by the RBHS prop before the winning penalty. @Nepia won't be happy, but HB officials.

@Bovidae To be fair the referee (looks like it might have been Jono Bredin judging by his hairdo) was on the other side so had no view of the incident but somehow the touchie managed to miss it. Probably would have just been a reset scrum Rotorua ball as it looked like it was coming out of the same channel. Whether it had actually "come out" or not is the main point to ponder over as if it hadn't then clearly should have been a Hastings penalty.

Watch: 'Hand of God' controversy in schoolboy rugby scrum

Crestfallen Hastings Boys' players were 'pretty emotional' about the incident, says coach.

@Steven-Harris yeah I played some golden oldies with his dad, who is still a unit.

Brock has always been one of those kids who was just a bit bigger but hasn't rested on that and has some skills.

Think he was in the Blues u16 squad last year too?

Stopped in to watch Kelston Boys play St Peters this afternoon
Kelston Boys far too strong for an out of sorts St Peters team that struggled to get anything going eventually winning 29-8
Was really impressed with year 12 first five from Max Talbot from Kelston who is a left footer , tall and rangy once he gets his running game going he has all the skills to get to a higher level he nailed his first 4 penalties one from 55 metres on the angle , but what is just as impressive is his kicking out of hand and the distance he carves off , just sat in the pocket distributed when he needed to and all the kicking options were spot a superb kick to the corner for Kelston winger to touch down .
Pretty much a faultless performamce from the 10 as well as 7 from 7 off the tee
One to watch in the future only 16 years old

    Napier BHS 40-29 Hamilton BHS

So Palmy looks like the team to beat now. I had thought TBC would win at home.
