News out of Nelson this morning that Shane Christie has passed away.

Really troubled with head injuries at the back end of his career and in retirement.

Sad for his family and friends.

    Was 39.

@Jet The Stuff Article has a link to Suicide Hotline. They didn't list it for CGB which was a medical emergency death but did for Saun Wainui. So my assumption is yes, it is what we think it is.

    Ah Christ.

Lost a family member to suicide aged 40 in 2020 myself.

@Jet Yeah I've lost a few good mates to it over the past few years as well. Insidious, and heartbreaking to realise the world of pain hiding behind the smiles of so many we love.

Even news like this can weigh pretty heavily on those of us who’ve lost loved ones to it. Hope you’ve got good friends around you at the moment, mate.

Sadly Shane's struggles have been quite public and at the same time kept behind closed doors.

He talked about not being able to be in bright rooms, having headaches, the impact of Billy's death and wanting a better understanding of CTE in the future. Then he has popped up talking about other topics as well.

I have heard some other stuff which isn't worth airing here.

It must have been a very tough path to this point, and whatever the journey there will be a lot of people impacted by this terrible news.

Before the impacts of CTE took over, he seemed a really fun dude. Hope he is remembered for that.

Will make Saturday's game between Ta$man and Otago a big occasion. He had such a big impact on footy in both Nelson and Dunedin.

As a 38-year-old it is always staggering seeing someone go so close to my age.

    Stuff has confirmed suspected suicide.

Bit odd though they’re confirming as such. I thought policy was generally to ovoid directory referencing it?

They’ve loosened some of those rules in recent times - media can say suspected suicide but only a coroner can rule it a suicide.

He was coaching until 2-3 years ago. Sadly he went off the deep end and became a massive conspiracy theorist around Covid, the vaccine and the mosque shootings, was sad to see.

Happened to quite a few people unfortunately even without the concussion issues.
