I know Al Bakkali is a great steeplechaser, but if you watch him training on a track by himself I don't think I'd believe he's an elite athlete, he looks so ungainly.

That's the kind of race that suits him best though - a slow pace and a fast finish, so extra impressive that Beamish out kicked him.

Lamecha Girma is the current world record holder, which is about 20 seconds faster than that race was. But he was in the field too! Finished 5th. I think the Ethiopians and Kenyans would prefer a much faster race but no one wants to set the pace in the major finals it seems.

The world record is actually 40 seconds faster than Beamish's time. That's around 5 seconds per lap. It gets to the point that a fast finisher has no chance of beating those guys in a a Diamond League meet due to pacemakers but can win in major champs.

Carnage with the 1,500 qualification as well because nobody makes them fast races bringing every athlete into contention

This was some bit of commentary by Andrew Cotter. (Might not work outside the UK).

    I’ve never understood that

Why don’t athletes run their race and pace regardless of the opposition

Especially if you know you can run up to 40 secs faster

Girma’s world record run 2 years ago in Paris at a DL, he got out to a massive lead and it was just a case of him not tripping up at any of the final jumps. Second came in 17 seconds after.

Kerr came close, agonizingly close to clearing 234. None else has looked like clearing it.

He has one more attempt. As things stand he gets bronze.

It’s been a great noght - that 110m hurdle race was big time by Tinch. The 1500m women’s and Hull holding on for bronze.

Yes I was glad for hull - it looked like she was going to drop into 4th as she was flagging so bsdly on the home straight.

Kipyegon is just a freak and ran a perfect race, but for Hull to hold off one of the other Kenyans was good ol Aussie grit.
