They were ranked 22 before this tournament. They beat Portugal last year from memory which raised eyebrows as we all saw how well Portugal did in the 2023 RWC, so yeah, after that, I knew they weren't a team to be taken lightly and will probably qualify for a RWC down the line.

@African-Monkey I have been to Belgium many times. Beautiful country, lovely people, loads of History, great beer.

And resting place of the Captain of the 1905/6 Originals.

It is a beautiful country. Easy to get around, food is good too, and yes, I wore an Aston Villa shirt and got stopped many times by locals to talk about our great team.

And yes, his legacy still lives on in Auckland Club Rugby.

Closer than I thought it would be. Real shame for Belgium but hopefully something to build on.

These teams will continue to grow as the years go on. Having the European 2nd tier comp they have will help their progress and despite missing out, Belgium have beaten Canada, Namibia and drawn today against Samoa.

And it all looked so promising for them in the 90s.

Similar to Australia and Wales: amateur administration when they needed to take it next level.

RWC2027 related - my little club of 2 Grades (plus hopefully Colts U21 and Womens next year) is based in the facility where Parramatta Eels NRL have their Centre Of Excellence. We actually get on great with them, and help them tick the "community sport that isn't rugby league" box without being fluffybunnies about it.

We go through their GM of Community for everything, and at our recent meeting had a quick tour of the facility. Met their coach Jason Ryles who is an absolutely massive human.

Anyway he mentioned that for RWC2027 they will probably have one of the bigger teams using their facility.

It's pretty fucking shmick and you bet we're going to photo op the fuck out of whoever lands there.

Having now watched the game, Samoa were the better team and had a completely dominant scrum but made too many handling errors which prevented them from scoring tries. Umaga missed two penalties. The classy young Belgian 1st 5 (Matias Remue), who plays for Toulouse, missed one as well.

Belgium went hard at the breakdown and won a number of turnovers. They are a gutsy team who did much better than anyone expected. Plenty of tears at FT. You have to feel for them.

Brett Cronan did a lot of referring as the TMO, but most of it was in real-time so no going back phases for knock-ons or penalties.
