@W32 David Kirk was acting under the assumption that world-class, experienced New Zealand Rugby coaches, of who they are several, would be jumping at the opportunity to work with the All Blacks if he sacked Scott Robertson.

Clearly, Tony Brown and Clayton McMillan, aren't in a position to or don't won't to work with the All Blacks until after the 2027 RWC.

But what of Jamie Joseph, Joe Schmidt, Dave Rennie, Vern Cotter, John Mitchell, Tana Umaga, Ian Foster, Robbie Deans, Steve Hansen, Wayne Smith or Warren Gatland? Do any of them crave the job at the moment? How long is Joe Schmidt contractually obliged to stick with the Wallabies?

Any of the above would fit the criteria that Kirk has set himself, although some are on a more upwards trajectory in their coaching careers than others.

@sparky i dont think it is quite that simple.

I expect after the review and conversations with him, probably his coaching team, probably players, they came to the conclusion it was going to be worse leaving him in charge than shutting the door on him and trying to find a replacement.

Think after the last 2 appointments (was rumblings of the decision being made before 'going to market') and then the coach being ditched 'mid-term', anyone who thought they'd have marquee people banging down the door to coach probably isnt that smart.

Something had to change, this is the 1st step.

Devlin saying he's heard that Hansen could stay, if this is the case, maybe he wasnt part of the problem in the reviews?

Lol if that's the case, they may as well have bloody kept Razor!

It's not beyond the realms of possibility, Hansen coached alongside Joseph & Brown at Sunwolves in 2018, then alongside Brown at Sunwolves in 2019, then he became Japan defence coach for 3 years, from 2019-2022.

Just the small issues of him being strongly disliked by the squad, failing to improve the ABs in his first two years, and being very linked to Razor.

Who has actually said Hansen is strongly disliked by Players? Isn't it all just guesswork?

Its been reported on here, by the same people who told us about 3 days in advance that Razor was getting the boot.

Henry only won one, but I agree. There seem to be a few odd ideas floating around - that nobody can work past 65, that certain coaches wouldn’t be willing to be assistants, or that their egos are too big for them to work together.

I don't know what age you are, but the coaches I follow, and the age I am, once one enters the 60s, it is like, I can't be bothered with all the bullshit anymore!

Interesting comments he made from an assistant coaches point of view,
It is right that NZR would want to know who a HC candidate would want as his assistants.
But the candidates shouldn't be the ones actually putting their coaching teams together.
It would be up to NZR to see if they can actually get the assistants wanted, as some of them may not already be employed by them.
Seems that both Robertson and Joseph wanted Brown on board.
There shouldn't be a problen with that; in fact it should make it easy for NZR, one assistant coaches position sorted; no matter which HC candidate they eventually went with.

Dunno how far down the line the process is, but I can see it taking quite some time to get the whole coaching team together.
If it's to be done properly.

I agree and I think most on here agree (and Sam Whitelock as well) choose HCs then together choose assistants...

It would be pathetically funny if all those you named said yeah nah then the camera pans wider and all that is left is Eddie Jones, John Mitchell, and Hammett (plus Gatland, I'd include him in this group, sorry not sorry)...

Rumour from a few in the highlanders camp. JJ will be heading off in three weeks from the landers and he likely has the ABs job. Now this source has fed me some accurate information in the past but also some half dud stuff. So take it with a grain of salt

3 weeks huh? that means new Landers coach must be in the current staff (Dermody likely), otherwise new guy would be getting thrust into round 1 of SR without any preseason with the team.

@pourfasse I wouldn't be surprised this time if we see a non-Kiwi as an Assistant Coach, but not yet as a Head Coach.

@taniwharugby Partially agree, David Kirk clearly thought there was more risk keeping Scott Robinson as Head Coach for the rest of his contract than going to market without a clear and obvious replacement.

The leap in the dark element is who we now get and how quickly and whether they can sort our most major problems.

But those are the risks you take in business. And I applaud David Kirk for following his gut. Fingers crossed it works out for him and for us.
