The nominee list is just to appease all sports. The fun (and debate) starts when they release the finalists.

I predict that TNZ wins the supreme award.

I've come to the conclusion that the Fern gets a different feed of BB matches than the rest of the world does, there's no other reason to explain his nominations in any "of the year" competitions this year.

@nepia I thought he was pretty good during the Super Rugby season, but people seem to have forgotten about that. Also, the fact that he was brilliant last year makes his performance this year look worse than it probably was.

He was better during the Super season but you shouldn't win awards on your performances in a 2nd tier competition if you weren't that great in a 1st tier competition.

@nepia I agree with that in case of World Rugby awards, but not for NZ rugby or other rewards. And he's not nominated for the NZ SR player of the Year award and I'd be surprised if he features among the Halberg finalists.

@bovidae ETNZ apparently declined having BUrling nominated as Sportsman of the year.

I wouldn't mind Michael Venus to win Sportsman of the Year. He's had awesome results this year. Winning the mixed double final of the French Open and reaching the mixed double final of the US Open (can't remember whether he won that one).

Yes, and I applaud them for that decision. They said they are a team and one individual doesn't sit above another.

@bovidae true, but to be in that position you still need to be an elite sportsman to achieve what they did, otherwise any pleb could drive that tub!

Every good team needs a leader, I expect his input into every aspect was a key component in the success, and at all the pressers who got to speak to the press, certainly would seem he was put ahead of everyone else?

If they had lost, who woulda taken the bulk of the blame (aside from Dalton who wasnt on the boat)

    @taniwharugby
Glenn Ashby was the skipper and on-board leader. I doubt Burling's input was any more important than Ashby's in the campaign, or that of Dan Bernasconi. The helmsman gets the publicity - postive and negative.

Ashby probably isn't eligible as an Aussie.

I agree but I think Tom Walsh should win it.

@Virgil the All Whites had a hard fought draw in the first leg of the qualifier so should be odds on to win it again.

The winners should be winners, not just triers.

In the Emerging talent little Nico Porteous is a bit of a freak and is likely to be representing NZ in the Winter Olympics at age 16.
Youngest freeskier to execute a Triple Cork 1440 and already signed on to Red Bull (at 14!)
He is part of the next wave of freeskiers that grew up following the Wells brothers around the mountain.

    Incredible balls on that kid!

I agree that NZ as a sporting country is big enough and strong enough in many disciplines for it's supreme awards to only go to winners, and not triers.

In other news, I see that Ronaldo picked up his fifth Ballon D'or last night. Its insane that him and Messi have won 5 each of the last 10. Surely these 2 deserve to be ranked with Pele & Maradona has the greatest players the game has seen. I haven't really seen enough of Messi play to have that much of an opinion, but I have seen a bit of Ronaldo and he's an absolute freak.

Some were quite predictable, others not so much, but IMO the awards went to the right winners.

Yep, can't really argue with any of those. all deserved.
IMO though (and it is a 'fans award'), although I loved the Woodman try, the one that made me really cheer and get excited by the sheer audacity and skill was Tony Pulu's finish off the DMac, Lowe, Messam interchanges. That was one to watch over and over.
