Surely the alarms bells should have been going off years ago when the Trans- Ta$man comp became so one-sided it turned in to an unsustainable joke? I mean, it's not like the same situation is happening in rugby, but the Wallabies are going on their merry way...

Taurua didn't make shortlist because she hadn't done all the necessary courses.

Reaching out to her would be like eating cold puke for NNZ but she's a winner. As for her Lightning contract - money talks

Sorry dogmeat but that's kaka, Taurua has more qualifications than any current Coach in netball New Zealand. If she didn't have the pre requisite qualifications for the job, she wouldn't have applied. It's personality driven, she doesn't fit within their framework like Tuivaiti, square pegs is round holes will not go.
But you are right on the money about the rest.

Read the Johannsen article regarding the coaching course:

Her elevation to the Ferns top job followed a controversial, and some might suggest bungled, appointment process that saw two coaches with more impressive records - Noeline Taurua and Julie Fitzgerald - overlooked for reasons unrelated to performance.

According to a former player close to the appointments process, Southby wowed in her presentation to the panel. She was well-prepared, well-researched and presented highly detailed plans of how she would bolster the Silver Ferns programme. The appointments panel also seemed to be unduly swayed by Southby having come through High Performance Sport NZ's coach accelerator programme alongside All Blacks coach Steve Hansen and Black Caps mentor Mike Hesson.

The high performance jargon and deep knowledge of coaching theory may have impressed the panel, but what they failed to consider was how that would translate in her dealings with the players. In other words, is this a coach that would command the locker room?

Had then-CEO Hillary Poole and former high performance manager Steve Lancaster - two ambitious administrators on whistle-stop appointments - placed more stock on the opinion of people within the sport, they would have arrived at a very different decision.

yeah your both on the money.southby had gone thru the high performance program and taurua hadnt, but at the same time taurua is a prickly personality who says what she thinks and whats everything done her way.
dana Johannsen article is getting closer to what went on (as i have been told) but there is more going on than that.

I've said elsewhere that the real reasons were Taurua's face didn't fit whereas Southby was an establishment coach Under 21's Fast 5.

You can go through all the detailed analysis you want and most of that is probably relevant. However, in every game except for the Aussie semi, the Ferns put up more shots than their opposition. That tells me the team isn't that far away. If they had two reliable shooters, they probably would have got silver. I think it is clear we are a long way behind Australia and there are big problems with the domestic competition and structure.

all our shooters are much better than the shooting stats at gold coast. trouble is there confidence has been eroded over the last 6 months.plus look where they were shooting from miles to far out .the defenders were able to push them out and were able to get between them and the post.at the other end it was the we let them get under the post.

Southby made a great presentation? Just like the Hurricanes board should have been fired for the Hammett hire, heads must roll at NZN (I think the article said most of those responsible have moved on but we need sacrifices!). Bring in a proven coach, not one who's good with powerpoint

I can't understand how someone could think that the skills required to do well in an interview would be the same as the skills required to do well as a netball coach. You can say that for a lot of jobs but few are so high profile.

The article in the Herald today with the Grant quotes was pretty telling, she pretty much said ‘the coach is shit, no one rates her & she has to go’ without actually saying it.

I thought we had already learned that lesson with Mitchell and Hammett.
That article used Hansen and Hesson as equivalent examples but with success. Both of them went through a lot of pain but were good enough to come through eventually. Hansen earned his stripes keeping Wales down while Hesson had the luxury of everyone being used to failure from NZC.

Stuart Lancaster is probably another good example of elevating a coach of this 'type' too early.
Without the success experience to support their ways, player confidence and buy in is eroded quickly.
Lancaster is now building back into being a very good coach the traditional way.
