Get rid of the wires for starters. Go wireless. BeatsX come with a wide array of ear fittings to get the most comfortable fit, sync effortlessly with an iPhone and have pretty good sound. Battery life and controls are good too.

@crucial I've thought about that. However, when I run, I do so with a small iPod shuffle that only has a normal head phone jack. I can't stand running with a heavy phone jiggling around in my pocket or strapped to one arm - I like to stay lightweight.

I guess the alternative is to run with a fitness watch that stores music also.

Hard to suggest anything within the price range, but if you don't mind spending more, check out jaybird headphones.

The only thing I dislike about the current Bluetooth wireless headphones is lack of USB-C charging. I'm not interested in carrying extra cables.

BeatsX charge from USB-C to lightning.
Great if you use apple. Not sure about otherwise.

Beats perfectly describes modern Apple: marketing over engineering.

In what way? Not defending apple btw, just curious as to what you mean. I use BeatsX and find them easy to use and with sound quality to match the price range. Fairly good product IMO.
The key (like most apple stuff) is to buy into the whole infrastructure. If that doesn't bother you, then they work well.

This isn't a cheap option but it is one that will last.

Buy the iWatch or equivalent watch and then wireless headphones. That way you track what you are doing and also have music without the need for your phone to be on you.

I found I was getting nauseated with in ear headphones at the gym, so opted for conduction headphones, they're OK, got my eye on the Sony wireless ambient sound in ear ones when I'm feeling less cheap though.

@hooroo they don't go in or over ear but sit in front of the ear and conduct the sound through the bones.

If anyone has used any in the pool and liked them, would be grateful to hear which ones

@crucial BeatsX have improved, but aPple paid billions for a company that was entirely marketing based. The soundstage from their headphones was dreadful and they even went to the lengths of putting extra metal into them so they "felt quality".

Even now their drive size is nothing to write home about, but they don't overemphasise bass liked they used to.
