I'm keeping an eye on the announcements from Top League clubs about players and staff leaving the club.

Obviously, some of these players may just go to other Japanese clubs, but others may come back to NZ (like Perenara and Retallick). Some of those coming back may retire because they're older; others may be available for NPC.

Here's the first list of names:

DoCoMo Red Hurricanes: TJ Perenara, Marty Banks, Tom Marshall

    Mitsubishi Dynaboars: James Wilson

    Canon Eagles: Jesse Parete

    Kobe Kobelco Steelers: Brodie Retallick

More names of players/coaches leaving their Japanese clubs (some already back in NZ for a while):

    • Kintetsu Liners: Pasqualle Dunn, David Milo
    • Coca Cola Red Sparks: Jotham Wrampling (now coaching Te Awamutu Sports)
    • Shimizu Blue Sharks: player/coach: Luke McAlister; coach: Steve Jackson
    • Kamaishi Seawaves: Oliver Polson, Sam Malcolm; coach: Scott Pierce
    • NTT Comms Shining Arcs: Fletcher Smith, Piri Paraone (former Wellington player)

@stargazer Was Smith a regular starter for NTT?

I wouldn't say no if he came back to Waikato, but without a SR contract he would soon be looking off-shore.

    @bovidae Sorry, missed your question.

Smith played in 3 of Shining Arcs' 7 games and started all three of them. In those three games (won by Shining Arcs), he scored 2 tries and kicked 8 conversions (and missed 1). He only did the goal kicking if Greig Leidlaw wasn't on the field.
I don't know why he didn't play in the other 4 games; maybe injured?

Two players who won't come back to NZ:

Both Tom Franklin (Kobe Kobelco Steelers) and Dan Pryor (Munakata Sanix Blues) will play for San Diego Legion in the MLR for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Treeby may have hung up the boots, but he's not leaving Japan. He's announced as one of the new assistant coaches (defence) of Honda Heat (his last club as a player).

It will be interesting to find out where he goes next. He's one of the players that could be a good signing for Moana Pasifika.

What Pat Lam tried to pull at the end of the Bristol v Leicester Gallaher premiership game over the weekend was a disgrace ..to lie to the official that Afoa was injured and then to see Afoa walk on the field which was not the end the world and then to his credit help disrupt the Leicester scrum but then undo that moment by jumping in the face of an opponent which starts a massive brawl is in my opinion is in very, very poor taste ..no wonder Leicester head coach Steve Bothwick was going off his nut ..
Have a bit of respect for both Pat Lam and John Afoa but after that incident you have got to question their ethics

@mikethesnow I am really surprised this incident has not gained more traction on this site..there’s just no excuse for what Pat Lam pulled and John Afoa’s behaviour was just as disgraceful.

@steven-harris "This site". Do you mean the Silver Fern? It's NH rugby. Not everyone follows that, or all of it (I usually only follow a bit of the Top 14). Following NH rugby live is even harder with the time difference.

I just happened to watch a highlights programme on Sky (after the Breakdown) where it was briefly discussed. If I hadn't accidentally seen that, I wouldn't have known about it, apart from what has been posted here.

It’s not really that surprising, NH club rugby is peripheral to many guys here. But you’re right that it was appalling from Lam and the consequences for Leicester could be missing out on Europe next season. I was seething watching it and I would like to see some form of sanction applied but I doubt it.

I haven't looked up the rules, so I don't know. Based on which rule are coaches/players cited/penalised when they criticise a referee? I just wonder whether that's a general rule that could be used here?

Agree it's a disgrace. Don't know what else to say about it other than that no one will believe Pat Lam anymore when he says a player is injured.

@stargazer it’s right up there with the stunt Dave Rennie pulled against the Hurricanes when he was coaching the Chiefs ..when his scrum was getting humped in the closing minutes , he claimed the only prop he had on the bench had never played tight head and that was after this particular prop had played several games at tighthead for the Steamers in the previous year .😂..not sure if you remember the incident, can recall it was a player with a Tongan name

Basically, a couple of minutes to go, Leicester 2 points down and all over Bristol, gaining 3 or 4 scrum penalties on 5m. Ref finally loses patience and cards the Bristol prop. Leicester opt for another scrum and ref calls for front row replacement. Afoa had been subbed off and was going to be recalled but Lam insisted he was injured, though Bristol had reported him subbed tactically at the time. Lam hoping for uncontested scrums. Other member of Bristol coaching team says Afoa not injured, Lam still claims he was. Afoa eventually goes on and Bristol scramble the ball into touch. Afoa taunts Leicester scrum half resulting in mass brawl.

Lam’s actions tantamount to cheating. Afoa just got a bit emotional and stupid.

I thought I heard the ref say they would go to uncontested scrums but have to have the full complement of 8, thereby leaving a man short in the backline.

With guaranteed possession that close to the line it would have been harder for Leicester not to score.

So Afoa on and roll the dice

    Could be very wrong though

    Either way, CHEATING fluffybunny

Surely they can be called to account for bringing the game into disrepute.

I want to know why the ref listened to Lam at all. The manager is responsible for the substitutions and reasons to the officials. Ref should've stuck with the paperwork.

There ought to be some sanction IMO, on the other point though the ref was put in an impossible position. The paperwork says one thing and Lam says another. What if the ref insists Afoa goes on the field and then he gets injured? The ref actually handled the whole thing very well (though he could have carded the bristol prop a bit earlier).

Pat Lam though was totally out of order and has done his reputation a fair bit of harm.
