@taniwharugby No Rory Woods? I watched him closely first year out o school when he was at my Wellington Football Club. Certainly has a lot of promise but being committed to Napier for the last eight months or so not privy to the manoeuvrings and reasons behind his move to Northland. I guess he may have family up that way or perhaps an overambitious manager/agent trying to push him too far too fast.

@taniwharugby Ahh that's good then. Haven't clapped eyes on him for the best part of ten months or so but back then he still had a fair bit of filling out to do to grow into his body, something which only age and maturity will do.

@Higgins think @Steven-Harris has seen a bit more of him than I have, but he is one of those players that does seem to have that something extra about him.

@taniwharugby I am genuinely excited about his prospects so will be keeping an eye on him to see how he turns out. At the Axemen he was not rushed, mainly being used in the Under 21s and runs for the second team despite being more than good enough to hold his own in the top side.

@Higgins he started at 6 for Waipu in the Prem final this year, unsure if that is his preferred spot.

@taniwharugby He was used as a lock for the Welligton Under 19 Reps last season but he played mostly as a blindside/No 8 in the times I saw him at the Axemen
You might catch a glimpse of Mr. Woods here in the number 19 jersey in the Central Region Under 19 Final against Manawatu last year. Others to move on upward in the Wellington lineup that day were No 8 Peter Lakai and Riley Higgins in the number 12 and Sione Halalilo in number 7 all who are in the Lions NPC side this year. Whilst the Wgtn halfback is Logan Love who is probably being fluffed by the likes of Darren Larsen et al
I do like the look of he scoreboard showing hanging on the green fence on the far side of the field!!!!!!!

@Steven-Harris yeah I heard, too many unforced errors, that said, our age group sides always struggle against Auckland and Counties teams in particular.

Northland Rugby has started discussions on recruiting a head coach after the Bunnings Warehouse NPC ends following incumbent George Konia's decision not to review his contract beyond this season. He's returning home to Hawke's Bay after three seasons in charge of the Northland Taniwha, but his immediate focus is to make sure the team continues with the good form shown so far with two wins and a loss. Konia hails from Waipawa, a small town in Hawke's Bay where his parents still live, while his in-laws are in Wairoa. He played 53 games for the Magpies and another 58 for Manawatu while studying at Palmerston North Teachers' College in the late 1980s. Konia also played five games for Northland in 1997. "My family has made a decision to return to Hawke's Bay. Another reason is to give Northland the best possible chance to be able to find another candidate to be head coach. "At this stage, we don't have a plan but the biggest focus for me is to make sure I finish this season to my utmost ability, be professional but also am on the lookout for a job back in Hawke's Bay. I am open to all options at the moment. -
@Duluth TBH, can't say that i will be sad to see him go, been alot of selections, lack of actual game plan and...hang on, this sounds familiar.
TBH, by all accounts alot of the issues that apparently stem from him seem very similar to those attributed to Foster.
Seems a nice guy in my couple of interactions with him, he is also apparently well liked by players but his actual coaching and management not that great.
Hopefully he finds his place if he carries on coaching.

It is good seeing so many Northland rep or divisional type teams running out this year.
Previous years we barely have any age group or even dev team stuff, but been a fair bit so far this year, early days but certainly looks like they are finally trying to promote some of our age group players, which will reap rewards in coming years.
@Steven-Harris you know how the u19s got on, I saw results for the vikings and a couple other teams.

@taniwharugby the under 19s went down to Taranaki 33-19 which was played at the Karaka RFC in south auckland on Saturday boys were hit hard by injury and unavailability..side had a completely different look to the side that performed well against Auckland & Harbour .

NRU announced a venue change for our final RR match v Manawatu...to Kaikohe to preserve the pitch for RWC.
Outside chance, but what if we finish high enough to host a semi final?

Time for a vent.
Is this another false dawn season? So much to like about those early performances. A toughness and grit not seen in recent times backed up by fitness - about time.
Since then, a few injuries, some unavailable ABs, and we have had 3 big losses. One to Canterbury was ok but these last 2 were so disappointing.
While our forwards have mostly stood up, our backline performance has been dreadful. An accumulation of selections ( coach, squad, game day, substitutions ) and tactics. Repeated.
It’s been very clear in the last 2 weeks that when teams pick up the pace we struggle and given the squad we have picked we need to play the game differently. But we don’t and pay the price for playing wide rugby - which works when your players have pace and good ball skills under pressure.
So much to like about the progress the squad had made this year, but you get the feeling the die was cast before the season started. The real conservatism has started to bite at the back end of season. And for the life of me I still cannot under stand the continued substitution of Reihana at 45 minutes?
The search must be on to back up our superb young talent - Reihana, Heremaia, Tua. The loss of players like Evans to Auckland is the risk we always run. We have so much of our young talent playing away from home or just not being nurtured at home, combined with a limited budget, making player development and retention our Achilles heal. Don’t know a lot about what Northland Rugby is now doing in this space?
I’m ok with Nock, Harris has been great and Moorby is class. But we should want pace and the enthusiasm of youth. And be developing the players selected in squad e.g. Kalani Going must be saying WTF?
As others have said it now feels like another wasted year.
