Will be interesting to watch ,

Cant help but feel it will either go pretty well or shithouse , but not in between ,

Based on the players either warming to his style or fucking hating it

Surely the players are sick of losing and would be prepared to do a few hard yards to improve.

Rennie got well and truly fucked here. I love it.

Less than a 40% win rate and rated as not worth trusting with a World Cup run. By Australia.

Will any international teams take a chance on him as a head coach? I can’t see it.

Well at least this has given us something to talk about.

I feel for Rennie, it always felt like he wasn't far off getting the team really playing well but injuries and the obvious lack of depth just curtailed his plans time and again. I actually had them as a dark horse for the RWC, particularly if they had Quade and Kerevi at 10/12. Eddie will be praying he gets those two fit or he's going to have the same struggles Rennie did.

Eddie is a good coach but his reputation is boosted massively by a couple of RWC wins against the ABs, despite failing to actually win the thing after that.

@KiwiMurph he had a 38% win rate with 20% talent mate. Scooby Doo would have made the spring tour if he had a gold jersey on.

It wasn't just the spring tour (though he did rest a lot of his best players vs Italy and it backfired horrendously).

                  He's had 3 years.

He lost the series to Eddie Jones' England last year.

He's never come close to winning back the Bledisloe Cup.

A lot of competitive losses in his tenure but that's not going to cut it.

It will be interesting to see if Quade's maturity and redemption story extends to working with Eddie. The Wallabies looked a different team with him playing. Eddie could well benefit from the depth Rennie had to develop.

But the reality is that the Wallabies always had a walk-up start to a semifinal courtesy of the ridiculous draw.

I think he's an excellent coach. Twice he's outcoached his Trans Ta$man counterpart at a RWC. He coached Japan to beat the Springboks. I think this is an astute decision by RA.

Confirms the suspicion I harbour that the Chiefs success was a matter of timing and the Professor.

I last had a RWC Semi just before kick off in the 2019 final. I lost that pretty quickly.

@KiwiMurph All true, but we watch Super Rugby and see the talent at his disposal. It ain’t there. It might be when everyone flies in from Japan/Europe and is fit and healthy, but they’ve played as we would expect them to. They spend from February to October mostly getting slaughtered by NZ teams. Do you think Eddie or anyone else would have done any better since 2019?

Rugby Australia has ensured that Rennie cannot coach elsewhere. His contract will be paid out but he will be on “gardening leave” for the remainder of the year.

Source? In other settings it is not uncommon, in order to defray costs, and rather than paying out lump sum equivalent to monetary value of unexpired contract, to pay the monthly amount until new job secured.
For someone like Rennie that might halve the ultimate pay out.

They went from a coach with a 38% win rate who just lost to Italy and has never coached at a World Cup to a coach with much more international success including success at 4 different World Cups.

I could see Wallabies making a real run at the RWC this year given their side of the draw and Eddie's intimate knowledge of England and Wales.

If Rennie is precluded from coaching, is he precluded from TV work, I wonder.

                                          https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/2023/01/17/eddie-jones-retribution-fires-parting-shot-rfu/

Eddie Jones has warned that “retribution” is a major driver for him as he embarks on a second stint as Australia head coach, suggesting that he will not be speaking to Rugby Football Union officials when the Wallabies next meet England.

Jones has been appointed by Rugby Australia on a five-year contract and will oversee the men’s and women’s national teams for a golden period featuring the 2023 World Cup, the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour and a home World Cup in 2027.

The 62-year-old, dismissed by the RFU last month following a review into an underwhelming autumn punctuated by losses to Argentina and South Africa, replaces Dave Rennie.

Australia could face England as soon as the quarter-final stage of this year’s World Cup in France and, in a wide-ranging interview with the Sydney Morning Herald and Nine News, Jones was asked about the prospect of meeting his former employers. 'I might have a conversation with some of the players' “I’m not thinking about England, I’m thinking about retribution because the most important thing is to get Australia playing really well and consistently well,” he said.

“If we happen to meet England on the way, well and good. I might have a conversation with some of the players and not with the administration. Then we’ll get on with the battle.

“You could maybe pick it now … the quarter-final [between Australia and England] could be in Marseille. Maybe age helps but once the chapter closes, it closes.”

Jones also vowed to be “the fittest 63-year-old coach in the world” and claimed that a Wallabies return was “the furthest thing from his mind” upon being sacked by the RFU. He believes that he will “connect pretty quickly with the Australian rugby community” and hinted that he could use the 2027 World Cup to lure stars from the National Rugby League across codes and into the Wallabies side.

Australia lost nine of 14 Test matches in 2022, beginning their year with a 2-1 series loss to Jones and England. Their new head coach starts with a trip to Loftus Versfeld to face the Springboks and is already excited.

“What a good way to start off,” Jones said. “South Africa is a side that we know are going to play set-piece to set-piece and kick the ball in the air. It’s almost the opposite of how an Australian team wants to play. We’ll need to be at our best to beat them.”
