was the gap this big last time before Oracle pulled it back?

    1100m in the 4th race - incredible.

Not sure if it's true but read there's a limit to the modifications that can be made this late in the cup.
Certainly can't chuck into the crew a Ben Ainsley.

Really? I didn't know that. Thought that they could do what they liked with the crew, and the boat was able to be changed as long as it was still with in the ACC "formula".

Probably not. Our whole package seems to be better than One Rich Arsehole Called Larry Ellison, this time around. Both hydro and aero dynamics, team work, cyclors v grinders, etc. We could have just sailed away in today's races with the faster boat, but sensibly chose to cover. Last time we had the better boat in light air but not so much if the wind picked up. Will be interesting if it gets stronger next weekend. Bloody annoying that they have a whole week to remedy things and that we loose the chance to push home the advantage.

Was good to hear that it normally takes 80 days and 15,000 pieces of carbon fibre to build a new foil, (unfortunately Oracle have them already). 30 pieces of silver changed history apparently, so who knows what a billionaire can do?

we seemed to have learned a lot racing BAR and Artemis - our starts were a big issue.

going to try and find one of those TNZ polos before the next race 🙂

i meant the gap between the boats when racing - 4th race we won by over a minute / 1100m

Yeah. We looked to have boat speed over them as well so pretty much stayed out of trouble and backed ourselves to get over them in the race. Commentators made a fuss over our starting but we are showing that we can match it at the start now. I wouldn't say that we were sandbagging earlier but perhaps holding back a bit.

@Virgil are you sure they don't have a rule change clause in there? e.g the Holder can add outboards to their boat if they choose?

Looks like there are limits, for example on the number of sets of daggerboards allowed, although I don't know if Oracle were allowed double due to the two boat rule. Looking back at 2013 I wonder how much of their turnaround was minor modification as opposed to all out change? We have distinctly different daggerboards and the cyclors which took months or years of development, you can't just look at ours and copy them just right no matter how much money you have. As someone else posted I reckon Ainslie was as big a factor if not more than any actual boat modification and the fact they worked out how to max out the handling of their boat as they went along

@canefan Definitely limits on foils / dagger boards but they apply right through I think, not just in the actual AC match. Basically 2 sets.

In 2013 Oracle did achieve some significant gains in speed after the Kiwi boat builders got there over the lay days. Adding Ainslie would have helped as well but as they say - the fastest boat will win. let's just hope we still have the fastest boat in a weeks time.

Apparenlty the gyroscope foiling system also started working last time around - that made a massive difference.

It's a huge amount to come back from though. There are also major limits to foil modification, etc that can be done. We're all nervous, but really based on the last two days you wouldn't expect anything except a rout next weekend.

Apparenlty the gyroscope foiling system also started working last time around - that made a massive difference.

It's a funny one... it should feel a lot better, but after 8 - 1 I just want to hide behind the couch until its all over and safe to look...

i know right? i'm sounding like a cliche machine right now with my non-kiwi friends, they are all excited for us etc but i respond with - "early days, Oracle will leave no stone unturned, just takes one mistake' - they don't understand that this is very familiar territory for us

Tell them that we (ETNZ) are "under no illusion" that racing will get harder.
                                  Oracle "has been here before".

I'm pretty ignorant to racing but can of the experts on here explain what happened the last time around? Seemed like we had the faster boat to get to 8-1, they made a "modification" and suddenly they had a significantly faster boat. I don't think I've ever read a reasonable explanation for that?

How did they power that gyro again?..... Apparently everything on board these boats is powered by the grinders/cyclors. I am sure the stability when we turn is down to leg power over arm power
