haha yeah some texts they read on RS today...

Bloody former Chiefs player Glen Jackson always favours them
Bloody Glen Jackson tries so hard to appear unbias he is always harder on the Chiefs

Not quotes, but you get the gist...

Gardner is one of the best, if not the best in the comp right, so he gets a semi-final off, assuming that means he gets the final, but surely he should have had a semi too, as above, coulda sent him to SA as the odds are thats where the final will be, and even if he has to come back to NZ, same travel schedule as the canes.

Proctor was in career form at the start of the season. Even some early chatter of higher honours. He's been a very good defender for a number of years but it was in attack that I saw the marked improvement.

Given Jordie is starting at centre I think we can put it in the bank that Boyd would've started Proctor if he were fit. All things being equal this is probably their best backline:

      10 Barrett
      11 Savea
      12 Laumape
      13 Proctor
      14 NMS
      15 Barrett

      22 Black 23 Aso

And earlier in the season you might even consider Aso snaking Savea for the starting spot. Aso has done well at centre, but he has really shone on the wing.

@Paekakboyz Savea looked trim and ready to play early on in the season. I liked what I saw, but then his form drifted and agree Aso was the better performed winger. With the injuries to NMS and Proctor, Aso has taken his opportunities with both hands.

@ACT-Crusader, yeah Jules was looking the part early on. Funny how so much of the Canes recent development is due to NMS and Proctor picking up injuries. Definitely a silver lining! Plus we've had Jane and Ben Lam in the wings... umm wings... you know what I mean 🙂

I haven't been all that impressed with NMS since his return, I'd probably lean towards Aso there eh.

@Bones yeah he hasn't set the world on fire. But his positioning has been good and he's had a few 'almost' moments. Hopefully he can rediscover that irresistible form.

With the development of players like Aso and Goosen, Jane has clearly had to take a step back and has been getting few starts this season. Has anyone heard any rumours whether Jane will return to the Canes next year (after his 2nd year in Japan)? His contract with the Canes ends after this SR season.

I doubt he will be back in a playing role. He can make bucks doing stints in Japan and has set the family up with a business to operate.
Although he can come across as a bit thick at times he is apparently quite valued for his analysis and coaching of back play both on defence and attack. He was always great at positioning. Players often joke that they have an onfield coach when he is playing and offering no shortage of advice. I can see him becoming part of the Canes off-field organisation. If they don't employ him he will just turn up and offer advice anyway.

He (well actually his wife and a friend) brought out a local gym that went bust. Got all the gear at fire sale price and setup a new gym. It's the family business now.
He is very much a family man and his support network for the kids is all around him. Nott the type to run overseas after money.

Yeah he was looking at short but lucrative overseas gigs as their son has a serious medical condition. Great that we'll see him (and his whanau) stay in NZ. I agree with the comments about his rugby nous, when you hear him talk about the game in detail it's like listening to a different person!

Sorry @Wreck-Diver as I have to agree with @Bones and @Rancid-Schnitzel

If available, I would have Proctor at 13 and move Aso back to the wing with Ardie Julian (edit thanks @booboo ) on the other. Aso's defense at Centre is a bit sus as he tends to shoot up and miss tackles.

Aso has done well in Proctor's absence but I'd have Proctor back at Centre in a heart beat.

Plus, whilst stats don't always tell the full picture, they certainly help to give context and those stats that @Bones linked to give excellent context.

Anyway, all a moot point as Proctor isn't available and I would go with the backline as suggested earlier in the thread:

                            11 Julian Savea
                            12 Laumape
                            12 Aso
                            14 Milner-Skudder
                            15 Jordie Barrett

Still a very settled and potent backline and one that has all the potential to help the 'Canes go back to back!

That's terrible. The first AR tried to whistle the Sharks out of their quarter final.

The second one was a truly terrible 7s referee. The idea that clown is being groomed to take care of real rugby terrifies me.

The third one is a known cheat and shit TMO.

If available, I would have Proctor at 13 and move Aso back to the wing with Ardie on the other. Aso's defense at Centre is a bit sus as he tends to shoot up and miss tackles.

Ardie? Surely he starts at 12? Jules maybe on the wing ...

Ah yeah... For the semi-finals why not go with something out of left field that the other teams won't be expecting... Ardie with his speed (and height) for the wing and put Jules on the side of the scrum as he's the bigger sibling.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake @booboo and I shall fix forth with.

                                      Cheers

Yeah he was looking at short but lucrative overseas gigs as their son has a serious medical condition. Great that we'll see him (and his whanau) stay in NZ. I agree with the comments about his rugby nous, when you hear him talk about the game in detail it's like listening to a different person!

Also the Cullen effect.. or kind of. I've been impressed with how Cully has grown into his presenting and commentating work

He was a pretty quiet guy, and having guys like Rush taking pot shots at your intellect (beer bottle!) doesn't help. Although I'm almost certain Rush admitted he was talking about Osborne aye?

Or we could call it the anti-Marshall effect! A guy you KNOW knows a lot about the game... not that you'd think so listening to him!
