The NZ Barbarians were the NZ B team. IIRC the Asian Dragons were the surprise boys team and included Jordi Viljoen amongst others.

Ah okay. I wasn't sure whether it was the Barbarians or Cavaliers team.

That selection from Viljoen in the AD team was surprising. Nothing Asian about him, but I guess they needed to put him somewhere haha.

@Stargazer Malachi Wrampling-Alec was in the team too, so it wasn't Asian.

@Bovidae Yeah, not sure there were any Asians in the Asian Dragons team.

            https://www.nzrugby.co.nz/news-and-events/latest-news/emerging-sevens-talent-to-be-named-in-black/

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) identified the importance of the World School Sevens tournament in the domestic sevens calendar, and will officially oversee the New Zealand Under 18 and Under 18 Māori teams for the first time.

Ben Fisher, New Zealand Rugby’s High Performance Pathways Manager, said the inclusion of the teams in the sevens pathway is an exciting step for aspiring sevens stars.

“Both sevens programmes have a strong history of selecting talented school leavers and developing them into world class rugby players. Overseeing these teams gives us the opportunity to bring their campaigns in line with our high performance programmes and while they only have a short time together it will hopefully give them a taste of what a future in sevens can look like.

            Coaches:
New Zealand Under 18 Boys - All Blacks Sevens Assistant Coach Euan Mackintosh

New Zealand Under 18 Girls - former Black Fern and Black Ferns Sevens player Kristina Sue

New Zealand Māori Under 18 Ngā Whatukura (Boys) - Karna Luke (already involved with this team (coach?), also Sacred Heart Colelge 1st XV?), Brendan Nolan (rugby development officer Sydenham RC & former Director of Rugby at the Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Academy) and former Māori All Black Jackson Willison

New Zealand Māori Under 18 Ngā Māreikura (Girls) - Matatū first five-eighth Te Rauoriwa Gapper, La Winitana (Wellington Māori Girls coach) and Reuben Samuels (former Brazil Women's 7s coach)

Based on what I saw last month in XVs the Māori U18 team should be really strong, depending on who gets selected for the Condor team, and the others. King Maxwell from GBHS might have been the quickest player there - lightning fast.

@Bovidae The AB 7s can use some speed!

I wonder whether they're now going to use the World School 7s as a pathway instead of the Ignite 7s? That seems to have disappeared since covid.

No regional and central (provincial) sevens this year again, either. A real shame!

Recruitment is being done through a mixture of schools comps and high performance groups at the moment. Most possible players are well identified anyway and the younger ones will be in NZSS selections at World Schools.
Condors is still a pathway but has the problem of being school based and not all good players get to play in it.

@Crucial From the NZR side, I understand that, but what about Kiwis who like to watch these tournaments? And players, who aren't in that pathway, who just liked playing in these (regional & central) tournaments, repping their province?

Same with Jock Hobbs U19 tournament. Gone. I really think it's a loss.

Yeah it’s a loss. I was explaining how it is currently working, not condoning the loss of the previous set up.
I have no idea why the provincial sevens stuff hasn’t come back.
In the old days it used to be a weekend tournament with Titch on the sideline in his deckchair

The Condor 7s are this weekend:

Open Senior Championship Sat 3 - Sun 4 December 2022
(Invitational) Senior Cup Mon 5 - Tue 6 December 2022

It's not broadcast on Sky, but I'm reading in comments on Facebook that Sideline live are going to stream it. Nothing on their website or social media to suggest that this is true. Could still happen, but Sideline live isn't the same quality anymore since it changed hands about 2 years ago.

The draws are on the Condor 7s website:

The Condor Sevens will indeed be streamed on Sideline live. They expect you to pay $19.95 to watch the tournament (I think it's $7.95 to watch the streaming from one field). Personally, I'm not going to fork out nearly 20 dollars for a two-day school sevens tournament.

The World School Sevens in two weeks will be on Sky.

Just reading that Hamilton BHS won the Condors again (beating Kelston 22-21). Seven in a row now.

I will be curious to see the Condor team as none of the Hamilton BHS players will be able to play due to their World Schools Festival commitments. That tournament runs from Dec 11-18.

By the way there is no Condors team at World Schools 7s. There are NZSS teams that aren’t necessarily being selected from Condors participants even though selection is after this weekend.

Are they entering their own team at World Schools?

No, they are attending the XVs tournament in Thailand.

Cheers. Getting to two similarly named comps mixed up
