Do you think he doesn't try to field as well as he can? After all he isn't picked for his fielding.

The problem with Southee's batting seems to be his attitude, which he could easily change. No one had a go at Chris Martin.

Southees big mistake was flaying 9 x 6’s and making 77 on his debut.
Expectations have been high ever since, but clearly he knows how to swing a bat.
Chris Martin on the other hand.. sometimes I expected him to hold the bat at the wrong end given how clueless he was with it -

I had no problem with Southee's innings last night. Other than he isn't good enough to bat 8. Or 9. But neither are the 3 to come in behind him and somebody has to do it. His first movement is to back away to leg and like Stuart Broad he doesn't like the short ball.
So you could make an argument that Timmy should have a go and see what happens. If he can get to 30, those could be vital runs.

Considering we were 36/5, making it to 278 was bloody great. Kudos to Watling, de Grandhomme, Southee, Wagner, and Boult for being a giant wagging tail. (I mean FFS, Boult scored more runs than Raval, Latham, Taylor, and Nicholls combined.)
England's lead was 30-odd to start with, here's hoping our bowlers turn up the heat early on.
