The Barbarians are - as usual - dripfeeding their squad for the game against Argentina (2 December NZT), but finally, there's a Kiwi in the team: Wyatt Crockett! Really awesome that the big man gets to finish his international career playing for the Barbarians; he has never played for them before.

I don't think those are correct. Australia haven't played 17 tests this year. They've played 13.

Jordan Taufua will indeed play for the Barbarians against Argentina. The squad mostly consists of South Africans, which is not surprising with Erasmus as the coach. He has, however, included a lot of current Springboks. That's a bit odd (and disappointing), I think, because isn't it tradition to invite mostly former or fringe test players? This is basically a "current Springboks + a few others" team. Hopefully, we'll still get to see a Barbarians style of rugby.

Taufua and Debreczeni are the non-capped players.

Lots and lots and lots of Saffas. Not really an international Barbarians XV. It's a shame not to see more Wallabies and All Blacks in there.

@sparky Yep, that's what I said.

Last year, the Deans and Robertson coached squad included a lot of Kiwis, but they were not current test players and that game was played before the November window. This one is after the November window, so a lot more players would have been available. I don't know why he picked so many current Springboks; it's disappointing. Hopefully we still get to see a free flowing Baabaas style of rugby, with some original, crazy moves.

I don't think this was ever tradition, it was just about the best squad that they could pull in - some Baabaas squads in the past have basically been the Lions.

We have been kicking the ball a lot for some years now. Just the reasons why have changed.
Previously it was to back our defence to create a turnover/spilled ball, then use our transition to attack to smash an unorganised defence. (opposition have now realised that they just need to work on ball security and not do much after this and they will win the possession and territory stats)
Now it is to try and break up the rush/flat defence. If you can keep putting the ball into contestable areas the defence has to keep reorganising to get behind it and are more wary of committing too hard. Trick is to make those kicks/stabs to space 50/50 contests at worst.

Former New Zealand prop Wyatt Crockett will captain the Barbarians against Argentina in the Killik Cup match at Twickenham on Saturday.

The prop is a World Cup winner with 71 Tests behind him and the most-capped player in Super Rugby history after making 202 appearances for the Crusaders.

He leads a starting line-up that includes eight South African internationals and the famous invitation club’s squad includes representatives from eight countries in all.

Chiefs full-back Jack Debreczeni — the traditional uncapped player in the starting side — lines up at full-back with Tommaso Benvenuti (Italy), Tom English (Australia) and Leon Fukofuka (Tonga) joining three Springboks in the backline.

Crockett, Luke Jones (Australia) and Juan Manuel Leguizamon (Argentina) are part of a formidable forward contingent including South Africa‘s captain Siya Kolisi.

The squad was augmented on Wednesday by the arrival of Cardiff Blues tighthead Anton Peikrishvili. The Georgia prop is on the bench instead of France‘s Alexandre Menini, who has been recalled by Lyon.

The Barbarians are taking on Argentina for the third time in their 128-year history.

The Pumas were beaten 34-22 at Cardiff 1990 but won the 2015 rematch 49-31. Lood de Jager is the sole survivor from the Baa-baas side that day.

@sparky Is it really Crockett's last game of rugby though? He signed a two-year contract with Ta$man earlier this year, so that suggests he'll still play Mitre 10 Cup in 2019, unless he's changed his mind.
