Great victory for the big fella. I fear these golds won't get the adulation they deserve due to the timezone and the lack of TV coverage here.

Hand it to the Aussies, they have it on two free to air channels with two different commentary teams.

I reckon 95% of that is because of Gout Gout, our teenage sprinter. Running in the heats of the 200m tonight, 9:15pm. Can't wait.

We've legit never had a good male sprinter before. If this guy is good... we're entering the Gout Gout age.

Edit: This is him breaking our national 200m record at age 16:

Yeah looking forward for seeing the young kid on the big stage. Shirvo was a decent sprinter, but OZ have never had someone that ran with this sort of ease. The expectations are as high as I’ve seen maybe since peak Sally Pearson

You had a guy get a silver medal in the 200m. Then your Olympic Committee blackballed him for wearing a human rights badge.

Edit: He had held that 200m record that Gout Gout broke since 1968.

Catching up on the events from earlier/yesterday - it is absurd how Sydney McLaughlin runs a US record time in the 400 and it looks like she is just jogging the last 50 meters.

It seems like she has it within her to break the WR.

Big time effort from Maddi Wesche to do an equal PB and win the bronze in the shot put. She only got the PB a couple of months ago in the US, and now did it on the big stage.

2 golds and 1 bronze is awesome for us.

Maddi Wesche (great performance) now has the double of Olympics/World Champs of leading into the final round and not getting the gold.

NZ finishes joint 5th on the medal table which is pretty impressive for such a tiny squad of athletes. Only USA, Kenya, Canada and the Netherlands were above them and NZ was level with Botswana, Spain and Sweden.

Ahead of Jamaica, Germany, Italy, Australia, France, GB, China, Japan, South Africa etc etc

Very credible effort. Once again NZ punches bigger than it's weight.

Very disruptive final. Stop / start with all the rain. Athletes were slipping over and they had to adjust the format during it.

That final 100 from Beamish is burned into my retina, as was Hamish Kerrs third and successful jump when he was facing ending up with the bronze.

Two clutch moments where you see a champ grit it out and show their championship bona fides. Never gave up.

Femke Bol is switching from the 400 hurdles to the 800.

I like it, cool for an athlete to accomplish their goals in one discipline and then switch to another...it would be cool if more athletes did this imo.

Sam Ruthe beats the national 1500m schoolboy record, hit time of 3:38 smashes the previous best time set in 1989.

Took a look at the world record progressions to see which year Sam Ruthe's personal bests would have set a world record.

                                        800m - 1938
                                        1,500m - 1956
                                        Mile - 1953
                                        3,000m - 1954

Interestingly his younger sister Daisy (14) has run just over 4:30 for 1,500m and that would have set the women's world record in 1956.

Sam Ruthe smashed the NZ U20 and U19 records, clocking 13:40.48 in his 5000m debut at Night of 5s. 13:35.84 Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the record for his age.

In Sydney, Boh Ritchie took down both the NZ U20 and U19 800m records at the Albie Thomas Mile. A record set in 1974 by Lorraine Moller.
