Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby Football Club
Match Report & Results 20 June

It was fantastic to see the 2020 season kick off with a round of matches for Premiers, Premier Reserves and Womens grades played. There is an interesting scenario this year with Premier Reserves and First Grades having combined, with some clubs fielding two teams in this grade. Currently The Eagles aren't one and this situation if it remains could spell the end of the highly-successful Barbarians. This following the demise of the Originals a couple of seasons back is another sign of the struggles to retain participation in Community Sport. Hopefully the team will be resurrected.

The Premiers ground out a hard-fought win against Ories at home and in doing so retained The Bondy Cup. The Reserves went down narrowly to Ories 14 - 19 and the Women also narrowly to Paremata-Plimmerton 30 - 24 and all three sides will be better for the hit-out.

The following match report was contributed by Honorary Auditor and Eagle's stalwart Brian Hall: -

The opening game of the Swindale Shield round was played in very wintery conditions at the Polo ground.

It was great to see a good muster of supporters from both sides who braved the conditions to support their teams.

Ories kicked off playing with the assistance of the wind in the first half and very quickly were awarded a penalty which they converted (Ories 3 - HOBM 0). In trying conditions, the game quickly became a forward dominated affair with Ories having a slight advantage in the scrums, where veteran Whetu Henry was a key factor, while HOBM appeared to have an advantage in the lineouts.

On one of the rare occasions the ball managed to find its way out wide HOBM full back Salesi Rayasi outflanked the Ories defence to score wide out. (HOBM 5 -Ories 3)

This remained the score through to half time.

With the wind advantage in the second half HOBM had significant territorial advantage and launched numerous attacks on the Ories line but Ories dogged defence held them out. During these long periods of territorial domination Ories still looked dangerous when they managed to break out into HOBM’s territory.

It took until the 30th minute of the second half for the next scoring when Brandyn Laursen landed a long- range penalty to extend the lead. (HOBM 8 -Ories 3).

Even with HOBM enjoying significant territorial advantage and the lead on the scoreboard, Ories still looked capable of taking the game away from HOBM with their frequent excursions into HOBM.

With a little more than five minutes on the clock and darkness ingulfing the ground HOBM captain and first five Brandyn Laursen slotted a drop goal putting the game out of reach of a determined Ories side. (HOBM 11- Ories 3).

The final score (HOBM 11-Ories 3).

HOBM can be very pleased with their performance, first up for the season, in extremely challenging conditions, against a competitive Ories team on their home patch.

Your scribe’s players of the day were James O’Reilly who had an outstanding game, featuring a number of bursts with ball in hand, captain Brandyn Laursen who played a real β€œcaptains knock” in a game where his kicking skills were key. Off the bench Jack McCormack made a real impact as did Mika Alaifatu whose distinctive orange head gear really stood out in the fading light.

The game featured a significant number of penalties as the referee’s enforce the rules for offside at the breakdown, leaving your feet at the breakdown, tacklers not releasing the ball when tackled and players entering the side of rucks and malls.

This can only be good for the game and allow it to return to the running and exciting game rugby once was.

HOBM with its fire power out wide look well positioned to take advantage of return to a running game when conditions allow.

There was a good muster of HOBM supporters who adjourned to the Ories clubrooms to warm up, refreshments and a chance to catch up with some familiar faces.

      @nzzp

IIRC last year they were in the next grade down too, I dont think they were promoted, just changed the set up on the Northland comp, so were always up against it.

You got that wrong TR. UK/Moerewa won the promotion/relegation game against Otamatea, so they're there on merit.

I wasn't sure where to put this but this is a pretty cool story of a young 2m Wellington lock (a rarity in Wellington) who has fought cancer and a serious neck injury to take his place in a strong Tawa club side this year.

@Canes4life why am I not surprised to see Harry Plummer considered an inside back in Auckland, but a lock in Wellington.

Do you need tall locks when you have Ardie?

                                      Is that to scale ?

Never realised Nonu was a hobbit, then again he is standing right next to Ardie

@MN5 this image suggests Nonu is 2 metres tall.
