Pretty happy with this team selection
D Mac
worked well with Mounga as a dual
Play maker. I think that’s a big reason for his selection.
Reiko
on the wing it’s his best position gives us a lethal finisher on the left side.
Reece
I like Jordan as well, but Foster did mention Reece was asked to up his work rate and he has,
Every game he has been everywhere getting into the game.MF and half’s Awesome all creators.
Most exciting backline we have put out for quite awhile.Forward pack
Great to see two jackels in the LF combo, needed I think playing Aussie.
Our two best Locks back togetherFront row
Great impact from the Bench in Coles and our 2 better ball running props to combat Australia’s props who make a big impact with ball in hand from their Bench.Overall not a Foster fan,but I see the makings of a game plan and the direction we may be going which is positive,so pleasantly surprised.
I just hope it’s not all stuffed up by Foster with unclear messages. -

jesus, it's like they make a couple of decisions just to fuck with the public. It all looks so good, and then we end up with fucking Ardie at 8 again. And seriously, if DMac's last test didn't play him out of the spot, then it is impossible to get dropped from the ABs
We are desperately short at fullback.
What did DMac do so poorly in his last test?
Serious question as I’m trying to remember. Even went back to the thread to see if it was just me forgetting things.
Sure the DMac v JB debate continues with merit and there are fairly valid concerns on the overall size of the backline (that shouldn’t have to be fixed by the 15).
There are also the old perceptions of headless chook play based on previous years that haven’t been shaken.
I remember the amazing chase back, tackle and turnover but that’s about it.My memory (other than awesome try saver) is getting tackled easily behind the advantage line. The bigger players are able to stand in the tackle longer.
DMac has a similar problem to Bridge but for different reasons. If he’s not in space then he doesn’t offer much. Bridge has concrete feet, and DMac might be too small for fullback.
I’d put him on the right wing and let him pop up whenever he likes. Could be freed from the requirements of fullback and we could actually get full value from him. Cory Jane style fullback winger.
I get all that. I’m not trying to argue that he is the best 15 just that he didn’t deserve the comment that he played himself out of the team in his last outing.
Yes his weakness at test level is size simply because it’s more likely that he will be caught upright in the carry and get driven back. The counter to that is elusiveness.Yes, but as the standard of opposition gets stronger then that weakness gets exploited more. Particularly with Reece on the wing as well, not a great defender and also a midget.
Yep. As I said, not the perfect answer but still performs more often than not.
I’m not a Jordie fan because I don’t see him having as much vision which, to me, is the most important skill at 15. He doesn’t cover the ground that is needed for the current game plan where the 15 is expected to continually come up. I don’t know if the tactic is the best but it’s what the coaches want and DMac does it better.
But yes, if Ben Smith found the fountain of youth I’d have him back in a flash over either. -

@kirwan who should be on the wing then?
Ioane at 11, if fit Jordan on the right. With Jordan injured I would try DMac on the wing, he’s pretty creative and could make a difference there. Certainly fast enough and a good finisher.
I’d have BB at 15, then JB if his brother really doesn’t want to play there anymore. But seeing as RI wants to be a 13 and is playing 11, is that really a factor in selection?

Damien is simply not good enough at test-level; runs sideways; gets rag-dolled and opposition love to see his name on the team-list.
McKenzie is not an international fullback full-stop, he's too short, too lightweight and looses the ball in the collision far too often. And he constantly gets isolated, as he often runs away from his support players.
Play him against tier-two opponents and he looks a million dollars, play him against big imposing physical sides and he'll get flattened, time and again.

I remember the amazing chase back, tackle and turnover but that’s about it.
that's the one highlight.
made errors, complete non-entity on attack.
we lack a great fullback.
One kick out on the full, 3 turnovers conceded, and 11 total metres (2nd worst back by metres, I think).
He did apparently beat two defenders and get away one offload, plus that fantastic chase and tackle, but overall he was poor in his contributions.
Thanks for backing up the sentiment. The match thread didn’t seem to be too worried at the time.
As I said I didn’t recall him having a horror so was trying to understand the comment that he played himself out of the team.
To be honest though it wasn’t a game made for him. All of our tries were scored from 15 metres out. Just watched the highlights tape and in Reece’s second DMac drew two defenders to leave Sevu unmarked. In Jordan’s try he was running a second hole in case Jordan’s run didn’t get through and in the build up to another he took us from a static position to a metre out stepping through two defenders.
I agree that the position is still debatable just don’t see him as the worst option.@crucial said in All Blacks vs Wallabies Bledisloe 1 Eden Park 7th Aug:

Sounds like your issue is more with 15 then? I'd much rather have a proven winger on the wing than a guy who can be pretty mercurial in positions he has actually played before.
Australia aren't Fiji or Tonga.

I think the best fullback in the AB squad is on the bench and his name doesn’t start with Jordie.
But Beaudie is still working his way into some kind of form, but in terms of skill set and ability, he is class at the back.
Could Will Jordan be our future at fullback. Needs to develop and mature his game a bit, but more game time on the wing will definitely help as it did with Bender.

DMac’s shining knights are out in force aye! I don’t mind him and his fearlessness is something else, but he stunk the house out last match and that has been a problem the last two seasons.

His defence is pretty special as well. He was seriously impressive against England in 2018 and his lack of size doesn't appear to be a handicap in that department.
For me, he's too good a player to leave out but the biggest problem is knowing what is his best position. I think I'd have him as No. 1 super-sub and back-up 10 and 15.

Absurd situation that many are hoping for a sub-par performance so we can get the best, (almost universally acknowledged), coach in there in time for the next WC.
A strong showing in '21 could be a terrible result for '23. Would it simply paper over the cracks? And come the world cup the failures of the 2017 Lions series, 2019 RWC and 2020 again come to the fore as we lack ideas when the pressure comes on?
