The Trans Tasman Rugby War

@booboo I dare you to post this on GAGR as a Kiwi. 100 pages I reckon :face_with_tears_of_joy: of vitriol. Blaming NZR for not propping them up by letting ABs play for Australian teams etc. Believing they prop NZ rugby up with SR TV money without an awareness of how big the AB sponsorship deals are.
Due to years of financial and structural mis-management, sadly imo they look seriously f*cked
- Running out of money, relying on loans from World Rugby
- Declining grass-root rugby, given competition from League and Aussie Rules
- Pro talent increasingly looking overseas, degrading their talent base, international ranking etc
Basically I feel they are desperate because without huge cash windfalls from hosting a RWC and the next Lions series it's hard to see how they can survive in their current form.
Twiggy? Venture Capital? In both cases, they cede significant control.I think they are lashing out because they really don't know how to turn an ever-worsening situation around ... arguments and noise can help distract from people seeing all this.

The reality is we need to determine if we should continue to invest in keeping Australia as a Tier 1 nation.

we damn well should. They need some success, and to grow the damn game, and share some broadcasting dollars. We cannot do this by ourselves

I hate to sound like @Derpus but what success is going to come from this? 19 years and counting for the Bled. Disastrous SR. Audiences switching off because they keep getting flogged = what revenue?

@antipodean no. You need to determine whether you can go it alone.
Because if you cant you are as fucked as rugby in Australia is. You gunna pull a competitive comp out of your arse with Japan and the US? yeah fucking right.

I'm starting to believe it would be almost as competitive, but with more money.
I also think the diaspora over here would watch NZ rugby anyway.

@antipodean dreaming. Japan might be able to cobble together competitive sides but that involves them throwing money you dont have at your players.
Not sure thats the outcome you are looking for.

You didn't read my previous post correctly., Same uncompetitive teams, more money.

@antipodean worked out well with the Sunwolves.
The only solace i have in the game i love dying here through mismanagement is that, on the long term, there's a chance you blokes are coming with us.

Charming.

Clearly it's time to rationalise the competitions, and replace the NPC and Super Rugby with a 10 NZ team, 5 Aust team competition.
@tim you know it wont happen, although they could replace NPC comp with a U21 or U23 comp as well?

These are the new franchises:
Northland and North Harbour
Auckland
Counties and BOP
Waikato and Taranaki

@machpants Okay, 16 teams, which means 15 regular season games.

@tim Counties and BOP doesn't make sense geographically, does it?
Waikato and Counties
BOP and Hawke's Bay (eewww)
Taranaki and Manawatu?Edit: I don't like the suggestion at all, though.
@stargazer said in The Trans Ta$man Rugby War:

Maybe, but Counties/Thames/BOP is a contiguous region along the east coast.
-
@gibbonrib said in The Trans Ta$man Rugby War:
Add some jeopardy, have BOP and Hawkes Bay play off for a spot etc
Oooh. Keep the same teams, only the top 9 from NPC play super rugby
-
@gibbonrib Nope. All 14 major (NPC) rugby provinces should be represented in a competition.
