Andre Esterhuizen (Sharks) suspended for 6 weeks for a dangerous (tip) tackle. Longest suspension of the season thus far.

Well earned tbh - you can't go suplexing people on the field. That could easily result in a broken neck.

Was it Tialata a few years back that did a similar one? No head hitting ground but a big wrestling slam?

Way, way back in my day. You would have tried to drive him back in goal for a 5m scrum, or towards the corner for an attacking line out.

MAORI ALL BLACKS LOCK JOINS AS REPLACEMENT

            26 APR 2017

Taranaki and Maori All Blacks lock Leighton Price has joined the Blues for the rest of the Investec Super Rugby competition.

The 1.98m, 112kg lock is a replacement for North Harbour’s Brandon Nansen, who is out for the rest of the competition with injury.

Price has played 41 first class games for Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki, as well as a New Zealand Under-20 representative and in last year’s Maori All Blacks for their northern tour.

He may be pressed into action immediately dependant on the severity of injuries to current Blues second rowers, Jimmy Tupou, Patrick Tuipulotu and Josh Goodhue.

Two other young players have assembled with the club as short term injury replacements.

North Harbour’s Hapakuki Moala Liava’a, a former New Zealand Schools and New Zealand Under-20 representative, returns to cover at loose forward, after completing the pre-season training with the Blues.

Auckland outside back Pisi Leilua, a Samoa Under-20 and Auckland Sevens player from the Suburbs club, is also a short-term injury replacement after impressing with the Blues A team.

Kaino will undergo surgery this week and will be out of action for around six weeks.

James Broadhurst has decided to hang up his boots. Sad to hear that he's not been able to overcome his concussion problems and make a comeback, but his health comes first.

Yeah gutting for the fella, having to stop playing at his age, I guess the thing he can do once the reality of being forced to retire is look back on his career and savour what he achieved.

The good thing is with rugby being more aware of these concussion issues he has had that support and hopefully assistance toward what he will do next.

I was just reading about this on Stuff. There is more to life than sport so Broadhurst has made the right decision, and at least he has some certainty now about his future. He'll always be AB #1144.

Gotta feel for him though, has a breakthrough season, makes the ABs and increases his market value 10 fold, then is forced to retire before being able to land a few more tests for his country before cashing in up north.

Reg Goodes apparently another with serious concussion problems.

Meanwhile, fellow Hurricanes prop Reggie Goodes continues his battle to clear concussion symptoms.

The prop missed the team's 2016 playoff run after being unable to shake the effects of a concussion picked up during a round-robin match. He returned late in the Wellington Lions' provincial season, but another head knock during a Hurricanes pre-season match in February meant he has not been sighted this season.

"He's in a similar place to where Broady was but not quite at the level," Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said.

"He's getting to a point where he's got no symptoms and then just pushes it that little bit further and the symptoms come back again. He's making good progress, but what that means for a return to play date we're not quite sure."

Centre Matt Proctor was also moving through concussion protocols, but was much closer to a return that Goodes.

                                    From Stuff:

Brown expects him [Sopoaga] to return to action against the Bulls in Pretoria in a fortnight.

                                    (...)

In addition to Sopoaga returning on South African soil, co-captain and hooker Ash Dixon (back) is expected to make his first appearance of the season against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next weekend.

Utility Richard Buckman (achilles) should also be available for the game, as should loose forwards Luke Whitelock and Elliot Dixon, who missed Friday's game with concussion and a knee infection respectively.

Loose forwards James Lentjes (elbow), Shane Christie (illness) and Dan Pryor (knee) are still out, but Brown confirmed Pryor was on track to play club rugby in three weeks, with an eye on playing against the Waratahs in Dunedin on May 27.

Brown said the gradual return of injured players, and players stepping up in their absence, would ensure selection headaches down the track.

That includes in the midfield, where Rob Thompson - playing in his first game since his dad died last month - produced a fine performance against the Stormers in place of Buckman.

Was previously just the Brumbies that made the table look odd, now the recent form slump of the Stormers is making thier place look wrong too, not least the fact they have less points than the Sharks, who are in another pool
