Surely before we start honing their skills, tactics and mental acuity we have to select the right cattle?

Hence Schmidt brought in as a new selector.

Don't leave. How else are we to bathe in your exalted knowledge of high performing teams?

Hardly need much knowledge to recognise that good teams delegate tasks and look for people with expertise in areas of weakness.
The CEO has a Deputy that is the CFO who in turn pays for advice from a tax expert.

Nope, for big business that's normal.

This is like the CFO paying for someone else to to do their own role because their performance isn't adequate. Basically paying twice for the same thing and eventually they will be found out and removed.

Public Servants and bad business are excellent at paying twice

They have explained what Cron and Stawbridge are doing and it isn't doing someone else's job. So no, not twice for the same thing.

To me it's bad business if you cant recognise when someone else can improve an aspect to your benefit. Squeezing the little bit extra out.
So in the CFO example you have someone come to you as a specialist expert in tax and you assess that their expertise added in could net some savings. It is expertise gained by concentrating on being a specialist only and they are in demand and want to stay as a specialist. Their skills are over and above what meets the definition of adequate performance.

People here are so keen to stick the boot into Foster and Co that they are coming up with rubbish. So you want a Head Coach that knows everything and has no need for assistants? And those assistants must, in turn, have the best knowledge about everything in their sphere?

It doen't happen that way in business, It doesn't happen that way with other country's rugby teams (some of who are better than us at the moment).

People are criticizing Foster a lot because he's clearly a poor AB head coach - not about having a rocket scientist to run the show... all we want is a head coach & coaching staff that can coach with good common sense, so you then know they'll apply a good game plan, tactics, selections etc.

That's the point mate, he doesn't coach with common sense... you only have to watch the way we play, not difficult to work out.

As we all know getting on top in the forwards is vital in the game - we're getting beaten by the top teams more regularly because they're executing the basics much better than us at the breakdown, obviously the most contested area of the game, yet Foster has done stuff all to address it... also it's a dumb tactic of his to consistently use box kicks to try & break down these flat & rushing defences.

@tim player management? WTF does that mean? Another excuse and I know you are not his advocate. The problem is the coach. Always has been. He is not there by consensus of the fern and probably NZ. He is inadequate. He was at the Chiefs. Nothing has changed. It’s like putting a smiley face on a turd. It’s still a turd.

@broughie It's a criticism of the coaches, not an excuse. As in the "man management" side of their coaching/organizing could have been better.

I'm guessing that the starting tight five for this year is firming up. I can see it being the following:

                          1 Moody
                          2 Taukei'aho
                          3 Tu'ungafasi
                          4 Barrett
5 Retallick (still there on reputation)

Really hoping that one lock will emerge from the pack to replace Retallick, who is purely in the squad on reputation. Not convinced by Vaa'i. Lord looks to have the goods, but is probably a year away. Plenty of time for more dynamic loose heads like Hodgman, de Groot, and Norris would be great. I'm assuming that Coles won't make it to 2023. Aumua is on the fringe, and hasn't kicked on. Lomax is middling, and Laulala needs to improve his impact. Tight head is pretty bare. Would be worth giving Newell a couple of games.

                          Reserves might be something like:

                          Taylor
                          Hodgman
                          Laulala
Vaa'i (Whitelock to rotate with Retallick in the starting role)

                            Laulala
Vaa'i (Whitelock to rotate with Retallick in the starting role)

Picking the top XV is a pretty hard job. Plenty of options in most positions. Very few stand out as head and shoulders better.

I'll take your Whitelock bait on behalf of the Cantabs though. Would probably sneak him in in front of BBR (needs to earn his third B back).

I'm guessing that the starting tight five for this year is firming up. I can see it being the following:

                              1 Moody
                              2 Taukei'aho
                              3 Tu'ungafasi
                              4 Barrett
5 Retallick (still there on reputation)

Really hoping that one lock will emerge from the pack to replace Retallick, who is purely in the squad on reputation. Not convinced by Vaa'i. Lord looks to have the goods, but is probably a year away. Plenty of time for more dynamic loose heads like Hodgman, de Groot, and Norris would be great. I'm assuming that Coles won't make it to 2023. Aumua is on the fringe, and hasn't kicked on. Lomax is middling, and Laulala needs to improve his impact. Tight head is pretty bare. Would be worth giving Newell a couple of games.

                              Reserves might be something like:

                              Taylor
                              Hodgman
                              Laulala
Vaa'i (Whitelock to rotate with Retallick in the starting role)

Nine and ten are firmly settled (Smith and Barrett). Midfield and loose forward players are the hardest to select. Really hope Jordie Barrett can kick on at 12.

                                Loose forward pool:

                                Cane

Midfield is going to be really interesting, especially with Jordie Barrett throwing his hat into the ring. Tupaea appears to have second season syndrome, and has struggled on defence. Goodhue is overcoming his second combination ACL/MCL rupture, but it will be interesting to see how he goes by playoffs time. Ennor is well below international level as a centre.

                                  Certainties:

                                  Ioane
                                  ALB (injured?)

(Umaga-Jensens need more game time to be considered)

                                  13 options:

                                  Fainga'anuku

Cane, savea, Smith, Barrett, Ioane, Barrett, alb, Reece, Jordan. ?, Mounga, and Leicester on the bench backs.

@machpants That is what I am seeing at the moment. Mounga really needs to get his mojo back though. We need someone who can manage the end of the game and that includes kicking for territory (example Steyn in the 2nd test vs ABs).

@tim said in All Blacks 2022:

Midfield is going to be really interesting, especially with Jordie Barrett throwing his hat into the ring. Tupaea appears to have second season syndrome, and has struggled on defence. Goodhue is overcoming his second combination ACL/MCL rupture, but it will be interesting to see how he goes by playoffs time. Ennor is well below international level as a centre.

                                          Certainties:

                                          Ioane
                                          ALB (injured?)

                                          12 options:

                                          Tupaea
                                          Havili
                                          RTS
                                          J Barrett
                                          Goodhue
(Umaga-Jensens need more game time to be considered)

                                          13 options:

                                          Fainga'anuku
                                          Goodhue
(PUJ needs more game time to be considered)

We could see a back line such as the following at some stage this year, which would be interesting:

                                          9 Smith
                                          10 B Barrett
                                          11 Clarke
                                          12 J Barrett
                                          13 R Ioane
                                          14 Reece
                                          15 Jordan

I think you should Jordie as 15 contender where I till think he may play for ABs
