Silverlake must be wondering why they'd offered so much money for an overhyped lemon.

Now we know NZRU were so keen to get the deal signed so quickly!

Twenty years of Ian Foster in charge of rugby teams that I support. No wonder 90% of my sports watching is now cricket.

They can't afford to fire Foster because of his severance package... Giving him a lifetime supply of KFC would bankrupt us.

            The realistic option is Schmidt

He starts his AB contract right now. So no other logistics needed.

Does he want a head coach role though?

@Duluth I know you can't answer that but I'm not convinced he wants a head coach role, so we are either stuck with Foster or we go to Razor with Schmidt taking the reigns short term. I'd love for Schimidt to take over for what it's worth.

Would be amazing to wake up and find he’s resigned. “Look I’m just not good enough”.

Our next 2 matches are SA in SA. Could go from bad to even worse. If the team keeps losing, player heads will drop.

And I don't think those s almost guaranteed losses will make him go. We will have to lose twice to Oz, including at Eden, and lose the bled before he goes. Otherwise he's in until RWC, out in the quarters

@hydro11 said in Foster must go:

It's hard to accept that that Irish team should beat us in a series at home. They really shouldn't based on talent. However, they are just much smarter than us.

I think we make a mistake by focusing too much on Foster. I don't really understand why Laulala did that in his own 22 in the first half. An Irish prop doesn't do that. They know better. That's a fundamental error in the way we play rugby as a nation - not just down to Foster.

                But, yes, Foster must go.

Irish team is dominated by Leinster, the top team in Ireland and one of the best in Europe. Their combinations are tried and tested. The Irish coaches can add in players from the other provinces to enrich the team and layer on specific tactics onto an already well functioning team.

The ABs used to have a similar feel. The players knew each other and the combinations worked. That isn't the case anymore and it shows.

Ireland = a very good team greater than the sum of its parts

NZ = a poor team less than sum of its parts

NZ head coach sets the culture of the team and the environment the players work in. Foster may have done ok as an assistant under Hansen, but he's not performed as head coach. His assistants aren't performing well under his leadership either.

Too much evidence to ignore now. No excuses about COVID or lockdowns or injuries. Foster had his best players available. It resulted in a series defeat. At home.

@stodders Foz has never done well as a head coach. 8 years of pain with the Chiefs, Ronnie takes 2 titles in his first 2 years.
Not his happy place - like Wayne Smith, but the poor man's version!

                  No way. Razor surely.

Schmidt should be in the picture but Razor is head coach.

He's got a loooong time to go before he gets anywhere near Foster's reign of trouble (And Stead has had no impact on my enjoyment of ND games 🙂 ). And at least Stead won something big last year! 🙂

I think a few more than just Foster need to shuffle off stage, to be honest - including some of the players.

Second part I agree, but we might well beat Oz in one out of two "fosters magnificent ABs hold the bledisloe for another year in a one point victory against 13 man wallabies at Eden park" I can see the sycophantic press already

Because of coaching. Their players are not necessarily better. But by god their team is.

NZ led the way on this. Others followed. Then improved on it.

Time for NZRU to take some lessons from others and build again.

Before we had a player run team we had headmaster Ted dictating things. The player leadership group from 2011 to 2015 was chock full of GOATs. The current lot are a shadow of those guys and a firmer hand is required

Shane Jurgensen was the stand-in head coach for this series. Stead also being rested along with some of the players. As much as the close results were a bit of a heart stopper (a) they were still wins, and (b) they'd have to do that for two decades to get near Foster's level of kill-joy-ness...

They also have a fantastic culture and leadership group

Yep. It works if you have the right type of leaders. NZ doesn't seem to have that calibre of leader, Whitelock excepted. So the coach has to fill that void and provide...leadership.

I think this series has also shown that NZ really lack a game managing 10. I think if you swapped Barrett and Sexton round, NZ would have had better direction. Barrett is a phenomenal player, but how many times now has he failed to manage his backline and drive the ABs round the pitch?
