@ACT-Crusader the communication, confidence, trust and tenacity shown there has become very rare in the past 6 years. Amazing to watch that and see them just all lined up every time, getting off the ground and not panicking.

I might be getting sentimental in my old age, but that whole sequence made me feel pretty proud as an AB fan.

I didn't believe the ABs had it in them to play that well for that long. At the end of the game I literally laughed out loud - it was a ridiculous win

I gave a huge mouthfull. For the last 7 years, since Chicago the Irish have been blowing their horn, labelling everyone as cheats, acting like pork chops on the field, trashed talked, called for YC before teams were already on the field, lost any and all sense of balance in analysis claiming the right to win and then that happened and what was even sweeter was seeing little Jonny lose his shit at Rieko.

edit: and the Irish bookies had them as 4/6 favourites. I think every bookie had Ireland favourites.

      Smell the impartiality!

our bookies had ireland as favourites too - but not by as much.

yes but I suspect posters here were saying the Irish were going to choke..

You have to be favourite to actually choke, and that's what Ireland did. World number 1, longest win streak, choke in the quarters

I agree to disagree. In other sports a lower ranked player can be leading then choke. As I don't pay that much attention to rugby rankings, especially in a RWC, I don't put much stock in them, especially against the top teams.
Secondly, my comment was closer to an observation than a judgement, I do believe posters here referred to the Irish QF curse. But when I saw the game, I'm not sure where the Irish choked. That Alamo defending stretch of the All Blacks was simply brilliant, the Irish tried their best there. And across the game I didn't sense the Irish choked, I felt they thought we were going to.

Not sure you could say the Irish team choked. But it’s fair to say Sexton did. They were playing right towards where we were sitting and I counted three clear cut chances for him to throw a wider pass to put a runner into the gap and he just couldn’t do it. Looked like the moment was too big for him.

I think Ireland had enjoyed so much success believing in and executing the process they felt it was just a matter of time before NZ made a mistake and they would be the beneficiaries

Unfortunately for Ireland, whilst the process looked good it wasn’t at the intensity which creates space and mismatches and allowed NZ to regroup and regroup and…you get the picture

I actually felt sorry for the Irish. I spoke to several before the game and they were just like us before those crucial games in 2003, 2007 and 2011, i.e. nervous as hell and scared shitless of the prospect of losing. After that opening loss to France they also had every reason to be the clear favourites. Tbf I don't think this Irish team would have folded like we did in 98 and 2003 (I don't count 2007 because that was fucking Barnes) but what they actually encountered was a very talented team that was for once playing with structure and to their potential. They didn't choke, they were beaten by a better team.

I just think the difference between the boks , nz , Ireland and France was so close, and you could play the same games over and over and get different results each time ,

best team on the day and all that

I think this win has to go down as one of the best in AB history, certainly modern history anyway. Ireland should have won that RWC with the team they had and the form they were win, this loss will haunt their players for years to come.

                  Should? There is no "should".

                  24 years taught us that.

Ireland were out on their feet. They had nothing left at the 75-80th minutes. The only thing that was keeping them in it at that point were the refs who didn't want to make a call. Ironically, the refs during the final wanted nothing but to make their presence known.

Exactly, we have more talented & skillful players right across the park, so does France and SA.

Ireland have lots of bit-part Super Rugby players who developed to fit seamlessly into their system, JGP, Lowe, Aki, Hansen, etc. would be lucky to get anywhere near France, NZ, or even SA's 23.

I very much disagree with No Quarter that Ireland should've won 2023 WC with the team they had.

@darylmitchell how would you explain Ireland's dominance in the leadup to the cup then? Could it be that they had a world class pack and a 10 that knew how to drive them around the field? Which is all that really matters in test rugby. And because they had that, all of the backs you mention (I don't think you've singled out any of their forwards?) had an easier ride and did well as a result.

Exactly, we have more talented & skillful players right across the park, so does France and SA.

Ireland have lots of bit-part Super Rugby players who developed to fit seamlessly into their system, JGP, Lowe, Aki, Hansen, etc. would not get anywhere near France, NZ, or even SA's 23.

Aki was one of the better RWC players, not a bit player and Lowe was great for Ireland.

I definitely wouldn't refer to that form as 'dominance' they were winning tests but they weren't exactly convincing, prior to the tournament many pundits considered France, NZ, SA, all had an equal, if not better chance of winning 23 WC, Also Ireland almost lost to the Wallabies C team in Dublin and overcome Samoa by a couple points in the lead up.

just looking at their QF 23 on Wikipedia, only a few players I would consider for ABs, Rónan Kelleher, Caelan Doris, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong (2018-2022 form), Andrew Porter, Joe McCarthy, everyone else is quite overrated on here, and most are currently 32 or over.

Aki is more than good enough to have played in the ABs basically over the last 6-7 years. His problem was that, 10-12 years ago, we had absolutely ridiculous depth in midfield

@junior sure good enough to get a few caps like Seta Tamanivalu or George Moala, nothing further than that imo.

One of the great AB wins of my lifetime. Experienced some great AB wins, but that was just raw, undiluted courage and focus, up there with '96 in Sth Africa
