New law innovations for Super Rugby Pacific in 2025 include:

    • Time restrictions (conversions and penalty goals): Players will have 60 seconds to attempt conversions and penalty goals. This was previously 90 seconds for conversions.

    • Play on from not-straight lineout throws: If the non-throwing team does not lift a teammate to compete for the ball, then play shall continue. If the non-throwing team lifts a teammate to compete for the ball, a free kick is awarded to the non-throwing team. The awarding of a free kick rather than a scrum is a change to the World Rugby law trial specific to Super Rugby Pacific, to promote the flow of game.

    • Protection of 9 at ruck, maul and defensive positions at scrum:

Ruck: A player who is, or was part of the ruck may not play an opponent who is near it (within one metre), and who is attempting to play the ball away.
Maul: A player who is, or was part of the maul may not play an opponent near it (within one metre), and who is attempting to play the ball away.
Scrum: Once play in the scrum begins, the scrum half of the team not in possession takes up a position with both feet no further than the centre line of the tunnel.

    • Starting play in Super Point: The team who scores the first try in regular time has the choice to kick off or receive in Super Point, which was formerly known as Golden Point. This replaces the coin toss.

I like the first bit, not the second. Scrums must remain in the game, otherwise you're trending towards a specific athlete.

But if you choose not to compete, whining about not straight throws is pathetic.

    • Protection of 9 at ruck, maul and defensive positions at scrum:

Ruck: A player who is, or was part of the ruck may not play an opponent who is near it (within one metre), and who is attempting to play the ball away.

How do you know they're attempting to play the ball? Why is someone who grabs towards the ball in a panic as you come steaming through the ruck protected? What's the point in counter-rucking if some midget can violate law 15.11 and there's naught you can do about it?

Maul: A player who is, or was part of the maul may not play an opponent near it (within one metre), and who is attempting to play the ball away.

    As above.

Scrum: Once play in the scrum begins, the scrum half of the team not in possession takes up a position with both feet no further than the centre line of the tunnel.

    Again, stupid.

Isn't this the 30th season of Super Rugby (and professional rugby)? Why no promotions?

I think technically this is the 28th season because of what happened during Covid etc.

jeez...you'd hope not, people remember 1996 as the birth of the professional game...if we're going down a "its 30 years but not the 30th season" route we really are focusing on the wrong thing

Rugby just has no idea. Apparently the new players' award is similar to the Dally M, but not like the Dally M 🙄

The Aussie guy that heads SR was on TV a few nights back and he used the words Dally M IIRC. If not, it was the commentators. Go ahead and copy the concept, but don't actually say the name!

One thing I must say about this season is that the communications and interactions with Super rugby coaches and team management is already a lot better than previous seasons which in my opinion is a massive win. Fans have been asking for it and you can see they are making a conscious effort to improve in those areas.

Small things like weekly press conferences/interviews, radio interviews, injury updates being provided(could still be better but much better than we are used to) as well as seeing a lot more interaction with players, whether that be on socials or TV etc.

It’s not much but it’s a start. Small things done right is a step in the right direction. It’s good to see.

Some of those Crusader injuries are carry overs from the NPC,Still to many injuries you wonder what the trainers are doing or not doing.

There’s more to that list for the Hurricanes as well. Billy Proctor confirmed out with a niggle, and Banks/Higgins in the same boat potentially. Crazy. Maybe get the sprinklers on the training ground might be a good shout.

Why? It's a nice, simple way to sort it, gives teams an impetus to score tries and less faff. It's actually the one good change.

@darylmitchell Draft helps to build stars and keep fans engaged throughout the year. Just tough to do it in a multinational league. They’d need 3-4 separate drafts.
