Was there rain earlier on? Taking tea at 48.5 overs?

Conway inside edges his first ball. Nice. (not out before I get (rightly) accused of shit stirring.

20 run lead after 31 overs with no wickets lost.

More like what was expected. They started out at close to 7 an over, but now dropped back just beneath 5. Good to see them dig in.

And I strike. Young out almost immediately after I write that. Looks like Conway should have been out the over before with a dodgy LBW decision, but there is no DRS as apparently Zimbabwe cricket couldn't afford the setup cost. ICC should have stepped in here and set it up. Pretty crap that the poorer teams don't get the full setup due to funds.

Just read too that due to dropping light, the fast bowlers are no longer allowed to bowl. Blimey.

Is Will Young ever going to score a test century?

Sorry, was in a hurry last night. I meant my post was inspired by Reddit names - not yours. Fat finger time.

Also, you wonder if ZIM should be in Tests at the moment. They seem to be really struggling at home - god knows how they'd go away

I was surprised to hear the commentators say that Zimbabwe will be playing the equal most number of tests this season with Aust. So much more than NZ! 🤣

Henry goes past Cairns senior to be 9th all time test wicket taker. Morrison at 160 is next on the list (Henry on 134, so that's probably a while away). Then an even bigger jump to Cairns jnr at 218. Dunno if we'll play enough tests for Henry to get there. If he does, then Chris Martin at 233 might be catchable as well, which would make Henry 6th overall. 5th is Wagner at 260, almost double Henry's current total.

He’s smashing minnows at the moment but his overall improvement is remarkable. Fourth highest average of the top ten. Basically equal to excellent performers in Boult and Wags and could get even better.

When you consider it was over 40 at one stage that’s a HELL of a comeback.

It’s just a bugger his age and our dearth of tests will mean he’ll probably struggle to get over 200.

I keep saying it, but he was the unluckiest cricketer I saw for some time. So many chances created and dropped. Marnus V2.0, but drops hurt not helped him!

Henry's consistency is amazing at the moment.
Hes not gone wicket-less in a Test innings since 2021.
That's 37 consecutive innings where he has taken at least 1 wicket, hes averaging almost 3 wickets per innings since the start of last year (62 wickets in his last 21 innings) at an average of 16.48

I think a big part of his early struggles was being in and out of the side and never able to build rhythm. That's the life of the 4th/5th seamer so it's part of the skills you need to build a career, but I'm glad that he got an extended run and made the most of it because he always looked so good every time he came back to first class level.

Definitely, and there wasnt anything really to be done about it.
Southee/Boult/Wagner were the best trifecta fast bowling attack we've ever had. They complimented each other so perfectly. Plus throw in Jamieson who came in at the right time and played a role in winning the WTC in 2021.
You can see why Henry barely had any opportunities.
its great hes taking every chance now and across all 3 formats which is pretty rare

There was talk of him replacing one of those three for the WTC final. I thought that was bullshit at the time but they’re all gone and then Southees form starting falling off a cliff.

                            Funny how much things change.

It’s only Zimbabwe ( and I mean that, they are shit ) but with these new guys and ( hopefully ) Jamieson and O’Rourke to return we might be looking ok for pace bowling depth again.

Henry should have replaced Southee in the side well before he became a fixture to be honest.

Yeah the whole ‘giving him a farewell’ was pretty bad in retrospect. He could have played vs Zimbabwe and still not made it to 400 wickets

Very good player part of the best trio of pace bowlers we’ve ever had at one time as @Virgil says but should have quit far sooner

                                  Southee has the worse record.
His longevity was great but he was hardly a James Anderson.

                                  Henry - 134 Wickets @ 27.69 - SR 52.67
                                  Boult - 317 Wickets @ 27.49 - SR 54.94
                                  Wagner - 260 Wickets @ 27.57 - SR 52.78
                                  Southee - 391 Wickets @ 30.26 - SR 60.07

Southee averaged over 40.00 during his last 3 years (19 tests) with a SR of 77.
                                  why was he picked

Funny career for Southee as well because you mention his last 19 tests, his first 19 tests weren't too flash either (with the odd good spell). He must have had a hell of a career inbetween those tests mentioned.

why was he picked ... as captain? For a subcontinent tour?

An average of 30 is pretty much the cut off between good and very good ( with under 25 being World class ). When Southee was in the late 20s I wish he’d given it away before hitting 30.

He might have eventually scraped his way to 400 test wickets as I’m sure that was the plan at the start of last summer but crumbs, didn’t quite work out unfortunately. He obviously bought Matt Henry’s pie cart cos he was giving them away multiple times every over he bowled.

which is what makes James Anderson's record so remarkable
is he the best fast bowler of all time? no not by a long way, but to maintain an average of 26 over 188 tests and 21 years is fucken amazing.
