B&I Lions 2017

I just noticed that Ollie Jager - formerly of this parish - is in the NZ Baa-Baas squad as TH prop.
Wonder if he'll get a game. He played with Garry Ringrose in the Schools Cup-winning team for Blackrock a few years ago.

An interesting fact I had forgotten that came up in this doco I am watching is that Gordy Slater played the Lions twice, 12 years apart. Good man. Can't be too many that have done that.

Anyone I would talk to in rugby in my age group wouldn't even think about him as a former Ireland coach, to be honest. Too long ago. He'd probably be more remembered for his comments about Welsh players hating Irish players priot to a 6N match a few years ago which didn't work out too well for him, and his non-selection of O'Driscoll for the Lions in 2013.
But I could care less. He's a spiky kind of guy - the world is made up of all sorts. At the end of the day, it's results that count in his business.

One thing I think is very noticeable in difference between 2005 and what I have seen so far is the knowledge about NZ that Gatland has added.
The response to the powhiri was good and confident. In 2005 A handful of Lions looked very uncomfortable and almost giggled through a rendition of Bread of Heaven.
Gaining a bit of respect off the field will help a lot with the on field performances. -

@Crucial Yeah, one weird observation by Woodward - something about if he did it again he wouldn't try to gain respect off the field. Complete lack of self-awareness.

That would be easy to do if basing the team out of Melbourne (while simultaneously playing more provincial matches).

Chris Smylie came off the bench for Otago in 2005 too and is/was in the WTG for the Canes earlier - could come off the bench if Perenara is not released.
Donald would have played if Waikato had been scheduled or he qualified for NZ Maori (or does he and Hill was selected over him?)

gotta have some Haka talk, I see it has lost it's Mystique, Auras less famous and less able cousin!
Interestingly, it says Dawson (of Hakarena fame) and Merhts agree, yet I cant see any quotes form Merhts in the article?

@No-Quarter yeah I honestly couldn't give a rats arse what that gobshite Dawson has to say.
I guess the issue on a tour like this is there is gonna be a lot of Hakas done, which will detract from it a bit - ABs x 3, was it 2 or 3 super teams plus Maori...so only maybe 3 games without it?
That said, again, don't give a crap what they say, but the fact they are talking about it, means it is something that annoys them or winds them up to a point, so fuck em!

The first quote is from Mehrts but has been misattributed to Dawson. In the second sentence he says "WE shouldn't dictate how other teams receive it". Dawson wouldn't say "we".

Matt Dawson fancies himself as a bit of a comedian but the only two times I've ever got a laugh out of him were straight after the 2003rwc when his club shifted him to centre to make way for a halfback who couldn't get a super 12 contract and his whining about being downtroud and having his arse whipped with a cactus.

Got to meet a few of the Lions at work today. A Welsh hooker who looks like Tony Woodcock (I assume all frontrowers look alike), Irish back Robbie Henshaw and English lock Maro Itoje.
They were real top blokes and that Itoje is a behemoth of a person. All seem pretty relaxed unlike the team in 2005 when the players looked on edge the whole time (I was working the 2005 tour for an events team in Wellington so saw the squad around a bit).
