Should this week's test be the ushering-in of a new era for All Blacks?

You could pick prime frank bunce at centre and it would make zero difference in our current shape outside these players. The centres are set up to fail.
-
@mariner4life Exactly. If we're not going to fix the actual problem, we may as well pick Ioane as he is the best defender and riles a few fluffybunnies up.
It would be better if we actually fixed it though. -
I’d settle for Robertson dropping Beauden Barrett and Savea. That alone would show he recognises the problems those players are bringing to the team and wants to move forward.

Where is all the Love for starting 10 stuff coming from? Do people want to see him suffer in a no win situation this early in his career?
What do you mean suffer?
He’s in the squad and has been selected as a 10/15. Plus we’ve had a gut full of BB and DMac running the cutter. No time like the present.
He is 2 years older than Sua'ali'.
If you are good enough you are old enough.
My prediction is Love (now 24 years old) will leave New Zealand soon after the World Cup, with around a dozen test caps to his name, many of which will consist of ten-minute cameos. He’s just not getting a look in.

I really wish people would stop lumping McKenzie in with Barrett. Barrett has played every important minute at 10 this season, it's entirely his shit-show, and blaming a guy who has spent almost all his time on the bench or coming on at fullback when wingers get injured - and playing pretty well there - is just fucking weird.
C'mon DMac has had plenty of chances at 10 and has been repeatedly found wanting. Neither are the answer. The cupboard is bare. FFS Jordie would probably do a better job than either. At least he has a boot on him. I would take any poor man's version of Grant Fox at this point.

I would agree but there is zero farking chance of Savea getting dropped. Only injury will rule him out and credit to Ardie, he's remained remarkably healthy over his entire career when you consider the minutes and effort he puts in.

Like many before him who potentially could have offered a lot if given the same chances afforded to others.

Barrett had played as many tests at 10 as McKenzie has now, in about 2016 I'd say.
McKenzie played his first test at 10 in 2018, his 2nd in 2021, his 3rd to 5th in 2023. Beauden's first 5 tests at 10 were in 20-fucking-14.
The chances McKenzie has had are, in fact, pretty much just half of last year - whereas Beauden has had a decade. -

I don’t reckon anyone pumps the legs as hard as Savea when he’s being scragged. Other forwards hit the deck at the mere thought of being tackled.

In Super rugby for example, I was surprised to learn that someone who was brought in for injury cover has to make way when the original player is available again, no matter how well they played.
I had no idea. That's a pretty insane rule.
So, these contracts handcuff coaches to an extent.
That's my understanding, happy to be proven wrong. From memory there was an article about a Crusader who came in as injury cover and played well, but had to step aside later in the season. Hopefully someone on here has some inside knowledge on how the AB contracts work, and what sort of clauses may be in play.
I think that's more about competition rules and squads than anything dastardly.

@reprobate last season was enough for me for DMac. He was at his erratic best, crabbing across field and putting pressure on our outsides. Plus he also had kicking issues. Yes Barrett has been poor this year but I think DMac is at best a 15 back up.

Yeah, I disagree - but hey that opinion is fine - I've lost patience with players in short periods of time, I just don't see anyone else banging on the door.
It's the talking about them as if they've both had a mountain of opportunities that irks me, because it's demonstrably false - it's like 60 tests Beauden has started at 10. Before last year Damian had started 5. -

including the Ireland game?

there is nobody else as they haven't bothered to develop anyone else as a 10.
Give Dmac the reins
Get Love to play 10 fulltime at Hurricanes to see how he goes
Leaving BB there seems like a good way to gift the job back to Mounga when he returns so the public believe he is the only answer to the mess we are seeing. -
While Dmac can be erratic, I think he can at least provide a better service to those outside him, and based on how the ABs are tracking, how the Blues played with BB at the helm (vs Plummer last year) they really need to give Dmac (or someone else) more than a few mins at the back end of a test.
