Rugby Championship to be turfed under massive SANZAAR tours shake-up

Rugby Championship to be turfed under massive SANZAAR tours shake-up

The annual tournament between the Wallabies, All Blacks, Springboks and Pumas won’t be sighted again, in full, until 2029.

Good. Tours are much more interesting.

There will be no Rugby Championship next year as New Zealand and South Africa begin their “rugby’s greatest rivalry” tours.

The Sunday Star-Times can reveal that the All Blacks will embark on an eight-game tour in early August next year, comprising four tests against the Springboks and four games against South Africa’s former Super Rugby sides - the Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Lions.

But the next full edition of the Rugby Championship is now unlikely until 2029, as the All Blacks will tour South Africa in 2026, a Rugby World Cup is locked in for 2027 and the Sanzaar tours will start in 2028.

    The Post

Robertson will win like 2 games a year 😲

Interesting. 2027 is supposed to be a full TRC, not a condensed one. So either that's changed or the article is incorrect.

It will see The Rugby Championship (TRC), the Southern Hemisphere’s pre-eminent tournament, played in 2027, 2028 and 2029. Importantly, it will also deliver for the first time a full Rugby Championship (TRC) tournament in a Rugby World Cup year (2027) allowing the SANZAAR nations an excellent preparation and run-in to the tournament.

So Paul Cully's article was incorrect.

Presumably the 2030 tours will just be the reverse of 2026's (i.e. SA travels to NZ).

I like it. Provides some more incentives for the international game.

My understanding is this year’s comp basically saved the 2028 edition, it was about to be gone.

None that I have heard, but you would assume they have sorted something out.
But to be real honest, I not too worried, not something that concerns me.

The Rugby Championship is a tired format - I would have been happy to see it revert to every two years, but they should have included Japan and Fiji.

A good chance for them to try and get Fiji and Japan involved, play a 4 team series between the lot of them.

agree with this, my main concern is it should have been done in conjunction

i thought there were broadcast deals in place, this was maybe already included when last agreed?

And that’s why you should be worried FFS

That’s 50% of your competition you dolts

So it's not the tours that are messing with the RC it's the Nations Cup?

Why do people find the RC tired? I love watching all those games. I also don't see why, under the current format that the longish tours can't be integrated into it every couple of years.

Mate I got enough in life to worry about. There is no way I can influence or would be involved in a Wallaby/Puma series etc, so to actually think I should worry about it, we perhaps just have a different outlook. I hope they work something out, but genuinely not going to worry . The whole rugby landscape is changing , but I don't find it affects me enough to actually worry.

@Dan54 i think the idea is less about us watching it...as the potential down turn of rugby in aus if they dont have a high level comp to attract interest. that assuming you buy into the idea we need a string local opposition (aussie) to keep us honest

Yep understand that kiwi, and do think we want strong local competition, but see no point in worrying about it. If I lived in Aus I would maybe have a little concern, but I don't so c'est la vie. I genuinely would worry if NPC etc was changed, but what Aus and Arg do isn't high on my list. I would almost bet a huge percentage of Aus rugby people aren't worried about NZ and SA apart from it meaning they get less tests etc.

@Dan54 thats fair...but i can assure you aussie rugby people i talk too are a bit annoyed for the exact same reason we're doing these tours, you want to be playing team on your level or even better, in a lot of ways the ABs are to the wallabies what the bokke are to the AB's
