Some were quite predictable, others not so much, but IMO the awards went to the right winners.

Yep, can't really argue with any of those. all deserved.
IMO though (and it is a 'fans award'), although I loved the Woodman try, the one that made me really cheer and get excited by the sheer audacity and skill was Tony Pulu's finish off the DMac, Lowe, Messam interchanges. That was one to watch over and over.

@crucial That was a great try, but the problem with team tries like that one is that the player who scored it would get the award, while most of the work before scoring was done by others. So, in that way, I think the award went to the right player.

Any of the 3 players would have been worthy winners of the Kelvin R Tremain Memorial Player of the Year award. I would have liked Goss to win to complete the clean sweep for the women but Whitelock was very good in Super rugby and then for the ABs.

given it is 'try of the year' not 'individual try' of the year I tend to agree...but everything else was (rightly) going Black Ferns so this was too.,

Interesting seeing comments out this morning how the Black Ferns are not a curtain raiser, they are the main event...

Question is, would they regularly sell Eden Park out if they were the main event?

Good thing they don't award these things based on reputation...

He hasn't been nearly as bad as some people here would claim, but no way did he deserve that. I thought Ioane was a lock.

    Um, no he's a winger...

I think that try that had me cheering the most was the Blues' winner against the Lions. Ridiculous skill.

Congratulations Beauden Barrett on being named NZ Rugby player of the year!

What do you mean "he wasn't"? But he was World Rugby player of the year, surely that makes him automatically NZ rugby player of the year too?

Oh, I see. Well you can't have it all, but at least he was nominated!

What do you mean "he wasn't"? You're telling me the World Rugby player of the year couldn't even make the nomination for NZ rugby player of the year?

But what is up with World Rugby? They usually get these things right - I mean Jerome Kaino in 2011 for example.

What do you mean "he didn't"?

Oh I see. Well who did get NZ Rugby player of the year then? Let me guess - Rieko Ioane!

    Not him either?!

    (congratulations to Sam Whitelock :p)

Isn't the world player judged over a different time frame? That is, if includes last year's EOYT.

and does that WR panel even look at how players perform in club competitions (SR, domestic comp.)?

It comes down to the player that had the biggest impact on the game in the year. DC won on the basis of one brilliant performance at a very key time at a very high level.
I doubt there is in depth analysis of all games played.

In a non RWC year it does become a reward for the biggest name though. eg this year all of the NH comments about BB were around him being a great player. They just had to have the previous year pointed out to them to notice.

For that reason I was surprised a Lion didn't get it just because that was by far the most prominent stage this year. Beauden's best test (but not spectacular) was probably Lions Test 1 though so perhaps that worked in his favour.

guess this could go in here...sort of an award

a few things stood out for me:

Woodman is the only women's player to make the 2017 team of the year judged by respected rugby website Planet Rugby.

and then how 'respected' PR under-rates BBBR by naming Itoje ahead of him...

The Planet Rugby XV for 2017:

15 Stuart Hogg (British & Irish Lions, Scotland and Glasgow), 14 Portia Woodman (New Zealand women), 13 Jonathan Davies (British & Irish Lions, Wales and Scarlets, 12 Owen Farrell (British & Irish Lions, England and Saracens, 11 Rieko Ioane (New Zealand and Blues), 10 Beauden Barrett (New Zealand and Hurricanes), 9 Conor Murray (British & Irish Lions, Ireland and Munster), 8 Kieran Read (New Zealand and Crusaders), 7 Sam Cane (New Zealand and Chiefs), 6 Siya Kolisi (South Africa and Stormers), 5 Sam Whitelock (New Zealand and Crusaders), 4 Maro Itoje (British & Irish Lions, England and Saracens), 3 Tadhg Furlong (British & Irish Lions, Ireland and Leinster), 2 Malcolm Marx (South Africa and Lions), 1 Mako Vunipola (British & Irish Lions, England and Saracens).

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/99955059/nz-womens-star-portia-woodman-makes-world-xv-alongside-five-all-blacks

one of the comments was amusing and apt...

Its like putting the strongest antelope between a pride of lions.. even though the antelope is still the best among its peers, the lions will eat it up.
