I would also be surprised if Ellison left. Him and Jamie get on well

That's where we are at now
Not coaching performance but that two of the coaches "get on".

For me whether Ellison stays or goes depends on what his role was. If he was responsible for deciding and implementing our patterns then I'd prefer he left. If his job was to faithfully do what he was told to by the HC maybe he can stay if he's comfortable with doing what JJ wants

So apparently Fozzie and Hansen will apply for some roll.
    This could get very interesting.

    A sausage roll, perhaps?

Also mentioned was that Dave Rennie had such a bad relationship with NZR, and particularly Steve Tew, that he didn't want to apply for AB coach in 2019.

One of Knowler's articles mentioned that Joseph's people reached out to NZR to get assurance that the 2023 AB coach position was going to be a genuine contest, and was not just rubber-stamping Robertson's appointment. Joseph did apply, but you can understand how Rennie might feel this time for the same reason.

Inviting applications for a rubber stamp process happened in 2019. Might it have been different in 2017?

So, a long list of 11 who met the criteria:

    Joseph
    Rennie
    Schmidt
    Foster
    Hansen
    Cotter
    Deans
    Mitchell
    Smith
    Gatland
    Crowley
    Pivac
    Haig

Have to shed two already and doubtless several people I've forgotten. I haven't considered people like Kirwan, Hammett, Henry, who surely aren't in any frames.

Simon Mannix? Currently coaching Portugal (was looking up their playing colours)

yeah, it's a terrible criteria as it's basically an over 60s club, most of these guys are close to retirement and in Japan setting up their families for life..

Finding it positive he wants to apply. Hopefully another sign things are being turned around at NZR

Kirk is not that stupid to not have his ducks in a row before sacking Razor.
    Done deal.

    Nope
Kirk is very big on Governance, and he has criticized previous selection processes.
He'll go out of his way to make sure it's done properly.
If only to show the rest of NZR how it should be done.
But may still end up where you said.

Having just watched the Brad Thorn padcast, I want him!
Think he ticks all the boxes, just.

The likes of BBBT should def. be part of NZR's coaching development plans

It has ended up that way just going through the process so it is seen to be done.

I think there is more to it than that.
This aint just about the senior XV.
For example the recent appointment of the new BF HC doesn't look good at a superficial glance.
I'd be hoping that a thorough process was gone thru leading to that appointment.

@Chris Hope Ryan is gone also.Lets just start again.
If it is Joseph he's going to need some good knowledge around him.
Most likely a new captain also.

I'm actually pleased NZR are talking to all and sundry and taking a broader look at skills and suitability. Makes a big change from simple succession and/or choosing someone on perceived charisma and PowerPoinf slides.

Wouldn't be surprised if they pick a head Coach to take us beyond 2027 but take a shorter-term view on assistants to fix short-term problems. Maybe that's the reason they're talking to people like Foster and Shag?

However, I think if you're going to list reasons Robertson was selected then his success with the Crusaders probably deserves a mention. Unless you're just making snide remarks while advocating for professional behaviour?

You don't think NZR picking Robertson on the basis he was incredibly successful with one team - the Crusaders - was the problem?

Minimal experience of how to handle failure, managing different team environments and absolutely zero experience of coaching at Test level - a masterclass in wishful thinking by NZR.

Thankfully, we seem to have moved on.

Ryan's experienced and, looking from the outside in, did a great job 2022/3. I'd stick with him if only to provide some continuity.

@Victor-Meldrew somethkng changed with Ryan post Fozzie, was Ryan better with Schmidt/Fozzies influence or did Razor change things up.too much when he came on board, either way the "trajectory " of our forward play changed when the head coach did.

So Ryan has .the ability, but it "seems" he can hold grudges or at least gets blinded to a point by some things so maybe needs to.have a minimal role in selection...

@taniwharugby yeah I'd prefer to lean towards a new direction, but if the board/HC are happy that post-Foster Ryan was him getting waylaid, then I'll be open to seeing if he can resurrect his reputation - it can't get much worse (which is also a reason to move on).

I thought in general forwards went well, I wouldn't change Ryan for sake of it. Though saying that a freshen up not the worst. I think the likes of Evans would stay, out lineout was ok from what I saw.. Mind you Evans is really a skills coach, not front line one. This is what we should have, same if Jane comes in, use him for high ball stuff etc, don't need too much input.
