@Chris Hope Ryan is gone also.Lets just start again.
If it is Joseph he's going to need some good knowledge around him.
Most likely a new captain also.

Ryan's experienced and, looking from the outside in, did a great job 2022/3. I'd stick with him if only to provide some continuity.

@Victor-Meldrew somethkng changed with Ryan post Fozzie, was Ryan better with Schmidt/Fozzies influence or did Razor change things up.too much when he came on board, either way the "trajectory " of our forward play changed when the head coach did.

So Ryan has .the ability, but it "seems" he can hold grudges or at least gets blinded to a point by some things so maybe needs to.have a minimal role in selection...

@taniwharugby yeah I'd prefer to lean towards a new direction, but if the board/HC are happy that post-Foster Ryan was him getting waylaid, then I'll be open to seeing if he can resurrect his reputation - it can't get much worse (which is also a reason to move on).

I thought in general forwards went well, I wouldn't change Ryan for sake of it. Though saying that a freshen up not the worst. I think the likes of Evans would stay, out lineout was ok from what I saw.. Mind you Evans is really a skills coach, not front line one. This is what we should have, same if Jane comes in, use him for high ball stuff etc, don't need too much input.

So apparently Fozzie and Hansen will apply for some roll.
    This could get very interesting.

Given their size I hope you mean role.

@taniwharugby I also like the way he's developed people like Vaa'i and took a gamble on Holland.

We don't know who was responsible for the odd non-selection policy but if that's a weak point, someone like JJ, Rennie should be able to sort it out like Foster did.

JJ as head coach, Rennie as lead assistant (Attack), Ryan doing the forwards, Jane the likey defence coach.

Ooh. Hang on, Jane as defence coach? Backs would be more more his thing?

If Ryan has a bias against blues as loosie contenders that might not be such a big problem as we only have Paps left. And I don't see why he'd be against Paps.

@nostrildamus Jane runs the Hurricanes defence. Jamie rated him highly so firms as the likely option.

I can’t see him coming in purely as a specialist high ball coach… unless he takes the backs?

Yes that's my unclear point. I know he's in charge of defence, I just can't remember that part of his performance in the ABs and I was really impressed by how he talked about skills.

From what I understand there is a bit of a gentleman’s agreement between JJ and the Highlanders that IF he gets the job, he won’t raid the back room staff, which counts out David Kidwell.

Narrows the options a little bit.

Based on the evidence we see, Ellison can't stay as the defence coach. I'd rather get Scott McLeod back.

I'd prefer Jane to Ellison any day. Jane has a great rugby brain and players always rave about him.

Tamati Ellison came in with a few wraps on him (though not as a head coach).

I suspect he’d make quite a good skills coach, focusing on the finer details, but maybe struggled with building a defensive pattern based off a chaotic attack.

I’d be interested in analysis on it, but suspect defensive efficiency has a correlation to the way you attack - and I’m not sure Lord Hansen and the Blunt Razor had those particularly aligned.

If we're going to give him credit there though, then we've got to question taking a punt on Bell, ST becoming almost a non entity under him, Lomax and EdG falling well off the pace. I can't give him much credit for Holland, come on the guy was an AB mainstay in the making with all the tools, it definitely wasn't a punt.

Catching high balls and stopping dumb chip kicks would solve 80% of this team’s problems

@game_film yeah a few small tweaks would get huge reward, but I guess thats the way with elite sport, the 1%.

Hardly a gamble on Holland, the kid has looked an AB for a few years.

Um, is that Ian 'injury is my best selector' Foster?
